Re: EIN # ???

I have an EIN# - which is an Employer Idefnitifcation Number. It's used as a Federal Tax ID.

You can file for free on the IRS' website, if you're set up as a business.

Let her (they) know that you do not have an EIN. It shouldn't be a problem for you, they will probably need it so that they can claim this project for their audit trail.

Re: EIN # ???

I would also recm'd you do set yourself up as a SMLLC to protect your persaonl assets and relieve you of liability God-forbid something does go wrong w/a project, and they come after you.

It's protection that's worth it.

They need this information so they can issue 1099s at the end of the year. For freelancers at my company that do not have an EIN the 1099 is prepared wth the freelancers ss#.

Re: EIN # ???

As an accountant, in general, I don't recommend a SMLLC but an S-corp. LLCs and S-corps have the same liability protection but there are advantages to an s-corp over an LLC. I'm sure your accountant will go over them with you. For some reason many people think LLCs have greater liability protection but they do not. Of course there are exceptions as to why one would get an LLC over an S-corp (a real estate holding company for example) but for general use an S-corp is more practical.

If you really want an EIN, you can get one instantly here as an individual or a business. For an individual you just put your name on like one and for 8A you check the ‘sole practitioner’ box:
