Egg Quantity for IVF for the BTDT people
Hi Ladies
I noticed some people produce like 30 eggs during IVF...
Why would your doctor want to produce so many eggs?
I was told by my dr that 10 is optimal..much more than that and their quality is going to be dimished.
What were you told by your doctor is the optimal number of eggs?
How many eggs did you end up producing?

My doctor was shooting for like 15... But we only got 6. More eggs = more tries. Lots of girls on here get a high amount of eggs and end up with a lot of embryos to freeze. I think it depends on the doctor and your individual case.
Good luck!

I agree that it really depends on your case. Some women are not capable of producing as many eggs.. etc..
However what I DO know is that quality is def more important than getting a ton that are not as good!!

Re: Egg Quantity for IVF for the BTDT people
Many of the women have PCOS, so we generally produce more eggs. Some women with PCOS also have eqq quality issues, so the high number sometimes offsets the quality.
Some women just respond really well to the drugs and make a lot of follicles/eggs. This has to do with age, etc.
Generally, I think the goal is about 15 eggs.

Re: Egg Quantity for IVF for the BTDT people
My RE told me that in all previous cycles (non-medicated and Clomid cycles) I normally had 17-23 follicles during my baseline. He said with IVF, he'd expect that many to develop and grow. I ended up with 22 measurable follies and they retrieved 17 eggs. All were pretty high quality and 12 fertilized. Today is Day 2 and 12 are still developing which they said speaks to the quality.

Re: Egg Quantity for IVF for the BTDT people
Producing a lot of eggs does NOT diminish the quality of the eggs. That is simply not true.
You have to remember that not every egg is going to be mature. Of the mature eggs, not every egg is going to fertilize. Of the eggs that fertilize, not every one is going to make it to day 3. Of the ones that make it to day 3, not every one will make it to day 5. Of the ones that make it to day 5, not every one will implant. Of those that do implant, not every one will lead to a baby in your arms.
If you have 10 eggs, let's say that 8 are mature, 6 fertilize, 4 make it to day 3, 3 make it to day 5 and you put back 2 and freeze 1. You might end up with one baby, twins or even NO baby. With your frozen, it might not survive the thaw, might not implant, etc. There are so many factors.
When you are spending close to $15k on an IVF cycle, you want the best chances for it to work NOW and if not, to have enough to do an FET that God-willing will work.
I'm sorry but when I read your post, I read it as being critical and I hope that's not how you are intending. I was one of the people with 30+ eggs. But, with my history, I have over 50 eggs (combined from different cycles) and have used well over 10 embryos (obviously in numerous cycles) and have only one baby to show for it.

Re: Egg Quantity for IVF for the BTDT people
i have heard 15 as being ideal. PCOSers tend to produce more because we stim well as opposed to older women or women with FSH issues. however the more eggs, the higher the e2, and the higher the risk for OHSS. also e2s over 5000 tend to result in lower implantation rates. so its important to manage the e2, which can get extremely high with high egg/follie counts.
during stim we saw about 20-30 follies. from my ER we ended up with 18 eggs from my IVF. all 18 were mature and all fertilized with ICSI. out of that we transferred two, i ended up with one baby and one blighted ovum (same pregnancy) and 8 frosties.
i have not heard the more eggs = worse quality, especially with PCOSers. but obviously the quality depends highly on the way you are stimmed and the more info the doctor has on your response to meds the better. of course quality is more important, but if you never want to have to do a fresh cycle again (especially if you are paying OOP) the more the merrier.
