Re: EEEEK! Palmetto Bug!--pics
We get the Australian cockroaches here. I wish they had a fancy name like Palmetto bug. They are common here. Thank god it is going into winter and they all die off. I HATE them. and they run FAST.
Luckily my apartment building is pretty new so things are sealed up, but we get the occasional one come in under the door. Thank god we have two kitties to catch them. Walking home on a warm summer night is miserable though. YOU have to watch where you step b/c they are all over the place. And they can fly sometimes. I heard the ones up north were worse...
You still don't want them in your house though. They can lay eggs, but not as much as the German ones.

I only have seen them in FLA. Is that where you are?
I'm in South Carolina. I hear they're bigger in Florida and Texas.
I have never seen them here in Texas. Maybe they are popular in South Texas? I lived in Florida for 10 years so they don't scare me. We used to joke that you could through a saddle on them and ride them to work.

Re: EEEEK! Palmetto Bug!--pics
A few years ago in our apartment we had one. We woke up to the cats chasing it, I got out of the bed and turned the light on which woke Darren up. JUST as he was sitting up in bed WHAM that sucker started flying and fly directly into the middle of Darren's forehead and fell in the bed! To this day I have to take care of these bugs. Thankfllly we don't see them in our house as much as we saw them in the apt.

Re: EEEEK! Palmetto Bug!--pics
See, this is why I don't think I could ever live in Florida. We had one once (I think it was actually a waterbug) in my apt. in Queens, and the damn thing took flight. I hid in my room with my baby sister until my mother dragged the neighbor kid from across the hall to come in and kill it.
If I were you, I wouldn't be able to go into that room for weeks.
