Education question
Currently, I have the following:
Undergrad: English literature Grad degree: adolescent ed Advanced certificate: gifted ed
I'm looking to start more classes this summer, but I'm torn on what path to take, and I'm looking for input.
I could:
A. Start a masters in literature, which has always been a dream of mine B. Start a path that would lead to a doctorate in the field of educational administration
Currently, I teach in a private school. Eventually, I may go back to public schools, but my school is a great fit for me right now.
What would you do?

Re: Education question
I would ask yourself which path you would want to go down as those lead different ways.
The ed admin is good to have if you are looking for the $$$, hours, and responsibility of school leadership. There is risk too though - there are people who can't find jobs and spent 9k or whatever for nothing.
Some non school positions also call for the ed admin degree. It also helps if you want to do any kind of consulting.
The lit degree sounds more like it's for personal fulfillment. What are the job opportunities like for that degree?
I am a teacher and decided against the ed admin because I just can't handle anything extra (I have a small child, a long commute, a husband who is rarely home, and I am the sole caretaker of my mom who is in bad shape) but that's just my personal situation. I might have gone for it if I had less responsibility.

Education question
My mom was an administrator. She did not have her doctorate. But she did have a master in it.
I would not get a degree just because it was a dream unless you can get more pay out of it. I know it sucks to say that but the money spent (unless you are independently wealthy and money doesn't matter) just because is a huge budget commitment.

Ah, that changes things a bit.
I would still ask yourself what your career goals are, but if there is no cost to you I would definitely at least do the lit degree!

Re: Education question
Do you want to be an administrator?
I am a teacher too and have thought about getting another degree, but I do not think I am all that interested in the extra hours and BS involved in being an administrator.

Education question
Honestly I'm not sure how much I would actually use either degree-If I went for admin I would prefer to be a chair over a principal. The idea of being a doctor is appealing though

Re: Education question
How long would each program take?
That is something I would have to take into account, meaning considering my long-term personal and professional goals.

If you're likely not going to use either degree, I'd go the Literature path bc that interests you. It'll feed your soul.
It doesn't make sense to me to get a PhD in something unless it's something you're truly passionate about it.

Re: Education question
I tend to say to go for the higher degree. You already have a masters+. I would go for the doctorate.

Education question
I have my doctorate in educational administration and am happy to answer any questions if you want to hear from someone who did it already. I'm also a department chair in a public school.

Re: Education question
I have the same exact undergrad and grad as you and wound up in higher ed. I agree that going for a doctorate is the way to go. You can teach, do admin, do research, do advocacy or consulting.
