EBF Moms Did your Ped prescribe a Vit D supplement?

I just took Jason to his 2 month well visit and the Ped never mentioned anything about Vitamin D supplements and like a dummy I didn't even think to ask.

I have a girlfriend who is EFB her DD and her ped gave her a rx for it.

Did your ped recommend vitamin D supplements for your EBF baby?

Should I call and ask?

I would call and ask. At my son's 2 month visit, the ped said to start giving him Enfamil Tri-Vi-Sol drops, which are OTC. I know some drs. wait until 4 months though.

We were doing a multivitamin but it was making her spit up so much, too rough on her tummy. My ped said to stop giving it, and just make sure she gets some sun.

not till 6 months and I honestly have only given it to DS a few times because it's disgusting and he spits it out. At his 9 month visit I told the ped that I don't give it to him and he told me that it's ok as long as I make sure to take a prenatal everyday.

Ditto. I only really started to give them to her around 6 weeks...she would gag on them so she now gets one pumped bottle a day with the vitamins in it.

ETA...DD gets tri vi sol vitamins...

Our doctor said to mix with milk cause it tastes horrible

I'll take his word for it, have no desire to taste it myself

MY DS also gets the d-vi-sol in a pumped bottle every day. You can buy it at CVS in the children's remedies aisle!

As per my pediatrician, I have been giving DS Tri-Vi-Sol since he's less than a week old and he's 4 months now. He loves it! I also take prenatals.

Re: EBF Moms Did your Ped prescribe a Vit D supplement?

I started at one week old. I'm pretty sure the dr I saw said it's b/c they can't measure how much vitamin D you are getting. So, I think if you take your prenatals regularly it should be ok. Seems like just a precaution. Can't hurt to call and ask though.

DD has been on polyvisol since 2 weeks. However, I don't think it is necessary since we go out every single day and even though I don't put her in direct sunlight - I am sure she is getting enough sun. I found a bunch of studies that say it isnt needed as long as you get SOME sun exposure.

But, I still give it to her, just in case.

Re: EBF Moms Did your Ped prescribe a Vit D supplement?

My ped does recommend giving a vitamin D supplement.

We started with the Tri-Vi-Sol but DS hated it (can't blame him -- it's gross!)

We switched to BabyD's instead. It's super concentrated and the dose is 1 DROP. I either put it on his binky or on my finger. No problems at all.

DS is EBF and has been on D-vi-sol since about 1 month. We use the Enfamil brand and it can be found at BRU or Stop and Shop or wherever. Once he hits 6 months the ped said she is going to prescribe a vitamin with flouride in it. DS loves the vitamins. He sucks them down straight from the dropper. I was shocked becuase they smell kinda strong.

Re: EBF Moms Did your Ped prescribe a Vit D supplement?

Tri-vi-sol was suggested by my ped but she said if I didn't want to give it she was fine with that too. I haven't really given it to her this summer since we've been outdoors a lot (even though she's not directly in the sunlight for long periods of time)

Re: EBF Moms Did your Ped prescribe a Vit D supplement?

My ped suggested it at 1 week. I started giving the D-Visol but didn't like all the added ingredients (it smelled like pure sugar. I found Carlson BabyD drops at Whole Foods and give that to him now, it's only one tiny drop per day. My ped said Vitamin D doesn't pass through the milk, and the reason he needs it is because he's not supposed to be in direct sunlight.

I had to give him tri vi sol but, only because I am bad mommy and stopped taking my prenatals after a month or two of EBFing.

Re: EBF Moms Did your Ped prescribe a Vit D supplement?

breastmilk is low in vitamin d, yes, but the only time an infant really needs to be on vitamin d supplements is when they NEVER go outside (religious reasons, etc.) or have some other health concern. what do you think people did before vitamins? Chat Icon some peds recommend it, and some don't. i personally didn't give it to dd.

the vitamins are made by formula companies too, just something to think about.
