EBF Moms - poll re: introducing paci & bottle

So with #2 on her way, I am determined to give BF another shot and try not to make some of the same mistakes I made last time.

With DS, we gave the paci right away in the hospital and also supplemented right away per the nurse's suggestions.

I'm starting to think that this played a large part in DS never really learning to latch well.

He got used to the easy flow of the bottle and would freak out when on the boob bc it wasn't coming out fast enough for him.

So, if you successfully EBF'ed, when did you introduce the paci & bottle.

I definitely want DD to take both, just trying to get a gauge on timing.

Thanks!

We did the paci in the hospital, and bottles not until probably 8 weeks. But only because I was going back to work and she needed to learn since my mom was watching her and I pumped.

He got the pacifier the night we came home from the hospital. He started screaming in the crib and nothing made it stop but that. Bottle I think at 4 weeks but he rarely had one.

Both right away and refused to supplement in the hospital. She had trouble latching so I pumped.

Now she is almost 5 months old and refuses both. Chat Icon I would probably not listen to my advice! Chat Icon

Same exact thing here! DS loved the bottles in the beginning (pumped BM) and all of a sudden 2 months ago "quit" the bottle and hasn't gone back since!!! Each aby is different and reacts to different situations! Good luck!

No paci (ever) and no bottle till about month 2 when I had to get him used to it since I was going back to work - and taking my boobs with me Chat Icon. Thank goodness he had no problem going from boob to bottle and vice versa. Only BF for 6 months though... I wasn't able to stay on top of pumping with my busy work/office schedule. GOOD LUCK!! Re: EBF Moms - poll re: introducing paci & bottle

Hospital gave a paci, against my wishes. He never took to it again. (Here and there we gave it to him, but he never kept it in over 10 minutes and didn't seem to care.)

Hospital also supplemented with formula, against my wishes. But I had a horrific delivery, so I was hospitalized longer than DS. He came home and was given formula and any breastmilk I pumped from the hospital. My entire plan was ruined to not give him a bottle until he was 6 weeks old. I thought I was a complete failure.

By 3-4 weeks he was EBF as I got stronger. He was breastfed til he was one year. It can happen, no matter how things begin! Chat Icon

Re: EBF Moms - poll re: introducing paci & bottle

We did no pacis or bottles until DS was 6 weeks old. By then he wanted no interest in the paci and would only take a bottle from DH.

Bottles weren't all that important to us anyway since I was a SAHM and despised pumping.

eta - We EBF'd until I weaned him at 14 months.

I chose other - Pacifier was introduced in the hospital. Bottle was introduced starting around 10-11 wks - before I went back to work.

I said other because we allowed the pacifier right from the get go in the hospital, but introduced a bottle of pumped BM at around 2.5 weeks.

With DD#1 2 wks for the paci and 3wks for the bottle as advised by the lactation consultant (those were the minimum times to wait)
With DD#2 we did everything quicker, 1wk with the pacifier(would have been sooner but we were having trouble finding one she would take) and 2wks with the bottle.

We did both right away with both girls(we only gave BM in the bottles) We had no issues.

My SIL waited until 8-10 weeks to introduce the bottle and my niece refused it. SIL was glued to that baby forever because she would not take the bottle. With her next 2 DC's, she introduced right away and was a successful BF'er that could go out and leave a sitter or my Bro with a bottle.

Re: EBF Moms - poll re: introducing paci & bottle

DD never really took the paci - I tried to use it from time to time when she cried at night and she took it once in a while, but it didn't stick.

As for bottles, I pretty much tried within a week of being home from the hospital. DD was great, went between breast and bottle no problem until about 4 months. Then I got lazy and didn't give it to her too often and she rejected it.

So, basically I'm of no help. The next baby will be on a different path for sure! I'll be using the bottle much more consistently.

Re: EBF Moms - poll re: introducing paci & bottle

Pediatrician suggested we wait 4 weeks for both. However DD had a bottle by 2 weeks but we waited until 4 weeks to introduce the pacifier. She's not a huge fan of the pacifier but she takes a bottle no problem.

DH gives her a pumped bottle each night so she will continue to take it. This is really helpful for when my mom or DH is alone with her.

Re: EBF Moms - poll re: introducing paci & bottle

DS would not latch so after 36 hrs of not eating we had to give him formula. I began pumping and he was on all BM bottles by the next day. I got the nipple shield a few days later and he latched! We still gave him a pumped bottle a night while my DH was home so I could have some rest. Now at 3 mths he refuses the nipple shield and is a great BFer! He gets 3 pumped bottles a day at daycare and I nurse him 3 times a day.
He had paci from the first week as well- he LOVES the paci.

Re: EBF Moms - poll re: introducing paci & bottle

we had to supplement in the hospital and the first couple of days at home so we used a bottle...we also used a paci within the first week. DS did have some confusion, but he was able to latch on successfully after a few LONG nights lol. Good luck!!!

Re: EBF Moms - poll re: introducing paci & bottle

I supplemented in the hospital at night to get some sleep. She got a paci at about a week because it was the only way to sooth her one night. She still gets a paci and bottle occasionally at three weeks but not often. I have no problems with her latching. She actually prefers the breast to the bottle.

I also chose other... Paci was right away, although I didn't want to. DS never stopped screaming in the nursery, so I gave in and allowed the nurses to give him a paci. It helped a little. I waited about a month or so before giving him any bottles. He took them fine until about 4mo old he started to refuse them. Now he still won't drink from a bottle unless it's me giving it, but will drink from a sippy cup no problem. DS is 9 mo old.
