Earl is headed our way...
Should be here tomorrow but will be a tropical storm by then. They said on the news 40-50 mph winds (mainly eastern LI)
What precautions are you taking around the home?

We put away all our garden flags, American Flag and umbrella. We stacked all our lawn furniture together. And any other lawn decorations that could possibly break if something were to fall on it, I will put in our shed.
I am hoping we don't loose power etc.
What about you ?

All patio stuff is going in the garage, all flags, plants, etc etc all in garage
Have candles, matches, tons of flashlights
tons of canned food and water, boxed food as well
extra batteries
car will go in the garage too
gas tanks full
But then again I always have this stuff in my house. This is how I roll. I have issues

when i get home from work just putting away the tent, stacking the tables, putting the garbage cans inside (cleaning them as well) and that is about it. We are having a party friday so all the stuff I had put out on sunday will have to be secured or put away

I'm just going to put the things inside the garage that could blow over. I'm not too worried about food. If we have to, we'll eat out, someone's gotta have power. Plus I'm working all weekend anyway...

We stocked up on essentials, water, milk, candy....
Have to clean up a bit outside....
And we have a generator if the power goes out....so I'm looking forward to a day of games and eating!

When hurricane Gloria came through LI there were some areas that were without power for 3 weeks. Just look at what that storm did to LI earlier this year - some areas looked like a war zone with all the downed trees and it took about a week to get power back to many areas If we had a direct hit from a Cat. 2 hurricane you'd be glad you made some plans to be able to get by for awhile without power if it's wide spread and you didn't have options to go to friends, neighbors or hotels, or restaurants or supermarkets.

Well, not toys, but DH plans to fold down his basketball hoop and place items up against the side of the house, so things don't blow away.

Some areas of LI it will be worse such as flooding and wind gusts. But the media has a lot of people in a frenzy.

Which would be why they tell you to get non-perishible food, things that can be opened with a manual can-opener like canned fruit, tuna, peanut butter & crackers, etc., bottled water, ice for a cooler, etc. And you can always grill some stuff if you plan properly - if its really looking bad have some hot dogs and other perishible stuff in a cooler so you can use it up by grilling.

yea when i worked at waldbaums we mocked people for getting WAGONS filled of food for any storm. I am like do you think if your power goes out that you need all of that? Or will be snowed in for that long?
My husband is annoyed at me because i told him we need to put things away in the back and he is like "why bother its not a big deal" Um our tent will blow away it has fallen down in less winds, our garbage pals will fly, etc so i told him since he is staying home from work anyway then he can watch for our things and when they start blowing away he can run out to catch them. Freaking jerk i want to kill him sometimes.

P.S as for food...if it came down to it... maybe we'd do it "The Colony" style and wrestle an alligator for it's meat

We put our patio furniture away in the shed and took down the gazebo we had in our yard as well. Other than having flashlights ready too, that's really it. We'll be in NYC for part of tomorrow night so the house better hold up on its own!

Well its approx 10:30pm and I am located in VA Beach so we are close to Earl time but Im not too concerned.
We stocked up on water and canned goods but most importantly we picked up anything in the yard (bench and table on front porch, patio furniture, torches and flower boxes in the back yard). We are praying all will be ok in the morning when we wake up.
