Ear infection/fever/antibiotic/rash dilemma

Ugh. I have to try my best to give you the short version! TIA Chat Icon

Riley is on her second ear infection in about 2 weeks. So she's now on a new antibiotic...amox something or other (last time was amoxicillin). We discovered the ear infection on Saturday.

Well on Sunday, she develops a slight fever. But it didn't escalate and she seemed okay. Fast forward to Tuesday- wakes up with a 101.2 fever. The ped's office said to still give it at least 72 hours.

So they have me bring her in cuz it's been 72 hours and she still has a fever. She even started to develop a rash on her back (doc figured this was eczema). The doc still said to wait another day, and if she still has a fever, we'll switch to a new antibiotic. That night she spiked up to 103. Chat Icon I was hoping that the fever would just break and that would be it.

Lo and behold, Riley still has a fever today. Nothing too high...but the doc decided to put her on a new antibiotic - Cefedinir.

And on top of this, her rash is worse. It's now developing in her ****** area and spreading to her legs.Chat Icon I spoke to the nurse on the hotline and she said to give her benadryl and see if it clears up, and then call in the morning.

I can't take it anymore.Chat Icon Chat Icon This poor baby. She hasn't been well all month long.

So...has anyone dealt with change in antibiotics? And a persistent fever?

To me this does not seem like the fever is related to the ear infection, I'm gonna guess it's some virus on top of it.

Any experience out there with this stuff? Sorry it's so long...I just don't know what to do anymore for her.Chat Icon

Hi hon - No experience with kids of course but could the rash be a reaction from the meds? I'm allergic to penicillin and all derivatives and get a terrible rash if I take it.

I'm sorry Riley is still not feeling wellChat Icon How are you holding up? Chat Icon

Sounds like it may be a reaction to the meds. Is the fever responding to tylenol/motrin at all? Have they told you to piggy-back? Could the rash be some sort of yeast infection issue?

The doc didn't think it looked like an allergy to the new med - she really thought it looked eczema-like. Although just now she woke and I checked her skin and it looks better.

The fever issue is still baffling though. Has anyone's DC had a persistent fever with an ear infection? how long did it lst?

i'd be afraid she was allergic to that antibiotic. i have the same reaction to sulfa drugs. did the benedryl help?

maybe it's yeast related since she's on the antibiotics... you can call the doc about introducing some probiotics (or i've heard giving activia does the same thing, but i'd still ask the ped). i'm not so sure about this though since the rash started on her back, but maybe she has a diaper rash AND another rash?

also, ear infections can usually be waited out and will go away on their own without antibiotics. if she's having trouble with the meds, it might be something to think about. just trying to throw some options out at you.

and Chat Icon hopefully she feels better soon!

I don't have any advice... my dd is on her second set of antibiodics for a persistent ear infection but she hasn't had a fever, or any problems with a rash... just wanted to give Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon because I know how you feel.... my dd has been miserable for about a month between teething and the neverending ear infection. I feel awful that she has felt bad for so long... Hope you figure out what it is and that she feels better soon!

oh Tara - i'm going to have to agree and say that the rash is an allergy to the medication.

when we saw the allergist last, I told him that I had fed Em some carrots or something...and that the next day she had some redness on her face. He said that's likely 'contact dermatitis' and not to worry about that. His exact words, 'if it is on her trunk and spreads to her back and then up and down her body, then it's an allergy, that's when you call me right away'.
