dying your hair while pregnant
I made an appointment about a month ago (before I knew I was pregnant) for this weekend. When I made the appointment, I said that it was for a cut and some highlights.
I'm not really sure - maybe you guys would know better than me how safe it is to die your hair especially in the early stages of pregnancy when everything is developing. You think I should call them up and tell them that I'm changing it to JUST a cut?

Highlights don't touch the scalp so it's fine. I highlighted with both my pregnancies with my doctor's OK.

I'm pretty lax about stuff while pregnant (drinking diet soda, eating cold cuts...I'm so dangerous  ), but I won't mess with highlighting my hair right now.
I am in DESPERATE need of a touchup, but I won't go until I'm well into the 2nd trimester. I got highlights during my last pregnancy around 20 weeks and everything was fine. But I don't trust it this early--you never know.

Highlights, as PPs said, do not touch your scalp so they are safe. Stylists do not apply the dye directly to your roots.

I'm a pretty careful person. I've totally cut out any form of soda (even the non-caffeinated kind), I won't let DH put any pressure on my tummy, I even walk slower! lol. I think i'm just trying to be VERY careful in these early stages. So with that said, maybe I SHOULD just put off the highlights until after the 1st trimester... just in case.

hi guys....i am a stylist and colorist.
there is no data showing any issues with either on the scalp color....or highlights at all affecting a fetus/baby.
i do preggos all the time and fellow co workes who have been preg.
of course ask your doc...but again no proof of anything harmful.... only thing that might be bothersome is fumes.

I get a single process and highlights. my doctor said it was fine. I did it throughout my last pregnancy and again this time.

i get highlights, my doctor had recommended waiting till I was out of the 1st trimester to start up again (So I got them done when I was exactly 12 weeks LOL)

My sister is a pro-colorist, while she also agrees that there are no studies that show there are any issues... I argue with her that if a drug had no studies that showed any issues it would be a class C drug, and I wouldn't take it unless I was dying.
She recommends a very gentle ammonia free semi-permament color. She's got two brands, one fancy one used in Europe for pregos that's about 3x the normal price, and something else called Loreal Shades which she says is as gentle. Both are gentle and both cover grays well. They just don't last as long.

I would just make sure your comfortable before you do the highlights. You don't want to be stressing yourself out about it. I think that if you decide to do them just make sure the colorist knows your pregnant, so they can be super careful. Also just make sure it is well ventilated. You shouldn't smell any fumes. If you do speak up and ask to sit in another area. Good luck whatever you decide.

This is why my doc said it's dangerous! It's not the absorption it's the chemical smells. I agree ammonia free is the way to be.

I got my hair highlighed the day before I tested.
I wasn't going to put it off.
Like others said - it doesn't touch your scalp.
And as for fumes- my hair girl is pregnant with her THIRD.
All 3 times she has worked right to the end- using dye, bleach, perms, all day long.
All her babies were fine.
You are't exposed to the fumes nearly as long as the hair stylists are...

I waited until the very end of the first trimester both times. However, my OB said it was perfectly safe to do anytime during the pregnancy.
I waited mostly because I was so nauseous the first trimester that I didn't want to smell the fumes!

the problem is that I CAN'T tell my stylist. She happens to be my boss's sister and I don't want work to know anything this early. So I'll just tell her later this week that I'm changing it to JUST a cut. Hopefully the fumes aren't bad in there, but luckily if I'm not getting anything done on MYSELF then I should be out of there fairly quick.
Thanks for your advice ladies! I think I'll wait until the 2nd trimester and then reschedule (if I still want it)
