dryer sheet or no dryer sheet?
I washed DD's clothes last night in ivory snow. I put them in the dryer without a dryer sheet cause I think I read somewhere not to use one. Well, the clothes didn't dry the first time around and I told DH to put the dryer back on for another round. Im sitting here on my couch folding DD's clothes and Im almost ALL done, and I see a dryer sheet.. and I asked him if he threw it in and he said yes. Please someone tell me I do NOT need to rewash all of DD's clothes AGAIN!
The dryer sheet is the lavender downy ones in the purple box.
TIA!

Re: dryer sheet or no dryer sheet?
I wondered the same thing? I washed some baby clothes in Dreft and wasn't sure if I was supposed to use fabric softner and or dryer sheet with it or not. I ended up not using either to be on the safe side because I really didn't know.
I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you. I think as first time moms we are probably be overly cautious. I doubt you have to rewash everything.
Maybe you should try posting the question on the parenting board.

Re: dryer sheet or no dryer sheet?
Your not supposed to use fabric softener. It could irritate babies skin and it's a fire hazard or something I think. I would say you don't HAVE to rewash but I probably would.

Re: dryer sheet or no dryer sheet?
I thought the dryer sheet removed the flame retardant chemicals sprayed on the clothing I could be wrong.
read the labels on the clothes, they should say whether softener can or cannot be used...
I think softener can also be an irritant to baby skin... so you may have to rewash...

The dryer sheet can irritate the baby's skin. I'm sorry to say it but I would rewash the clothes. DS is almost 20 months and I still don't use a dryer sheet!

Re: dryer sheet or no dryer sheet?
I was told not to use dryer sheets because they remove the flame retardant quality of the clothes and leave a reside that can irritate the baby.
As for fabric softener I was told that a tiny couple of drops would be alright if you wanted to add the nice scent to the clothes. However, you should not add the recommended capful. Again it can leave a residue that can irritate the baby.

Re: dryer sheet or no dryer sheet?
I got the dryer sheets that are for babies, they're right next to the Dreft in BRU.

Re: dryer sheet or no dryer sheet?
I wouldn't use a dryer sheet.
But a tad bit of fabric softener with the "extra rinse" cycle on is fine according to our pediatrician.

Good to know. I hate not using any fabric softener.

Re: dryer sheet or no dryer sheet?
I don't use dryer sheets but I used fabric softner all the time. Hayley had no problem with it. I washed w/Dreft and then used Downy.
They do sell baby fabric softner in BRU next to where they sell the Dreft.

not to worry you, but i think that using the dryer sheet would mean that the flame-retardent spray is no longer there - meaning the clothes are no longer safe to use.
"Not only can dryer sheets cause irritation and allergic reactions, but they can also be a serious hazard to your baby's health. Most dryer sheets and fabric softeners have the potential to reduce or remove the fire retardant chemicals on your newborn's clothes, putting him or her at risk in the event of a fire. It is also important to keep in mind that using dryer sheets on your clothes, even if they are dried separately from your baby's, can leave a residue inside the dryer and rub off onto your newborn's clothing. "

Re: dryer sheet or no dryer sheet?
I dont want to sound dumb, but why are baby clothes sprayed with flame retardant? Do babies spontaneously burst into flames?

Re: dryer sheet or no dryer sheet?
so is it safe to say the main reason for not using a dryer sheet would be that it removes the flame retardant? Then why is it ok to use dryer sheets later on?

Actually, very few clothes are flame retardant (they will specifically state it if they are) so in that case fabric softner is safe to use BUT it can irritate the babies skin.
We used the toddler care ones from BRU (still do) and sensitive/dye & fragrance free softner with the wash. Never had a problem.
Personally, I couldn't not use the fabric softener because the clothes came out so stiff. So I was happy to find these alternatives.
ETA: for those clothes (usually pjs) that state flame resistant you should not use softener.

My sister is allergic to everything so we use the dye and chemical free laundry detergent and similar dryer sheets.

That's actually a good question! DH asked me that when I told him no dryer sheets, and I had no answer for him!

in case there is a fire, the first thing to "catch" would be clothing, as opposed to skin. a flame retardent coating helps slow that down, but it doesn't stop it completely.
maybeababyin08, i want to see pics if your baby spontaneously bursts into flames!!!
