dry wall and fixing holes?

So DH accidentally tore our baby gate out of our wall this morning. It made a hole in the wall so you can see beyond the drywall and into the pipes. The hole is about 5 inches wide into the wall and about 8 inches of dry wall are missing. It is a cone shape mess. I think this is beyond my repair skills. How much do you think it would cost me to repair? If I DIY what do I do?

We rent... the previous tentants left holes just like you explained all over the house. There is this criss-cross type tape that you can get... it's avout $5 at HD or Lowes. Then after putting a bunch of that tape on (sorry I don't konw the name of it but if you explain it to any HD or lowes employee they will show you were it is LOL) then you just spackle right on to that tape. Sand it down, paint, and your good to go. Chat Icon

go to HD and buy a small piece of drywall.....they ahve them that are maybe 2'x2' and cut a small piece for the hole if its big.....if its not big you can fill the hole with news paper and then put drywall tape over it....get the mesh kind.....then just spackle over it...

For an 8 inch hole, you definitely can't fix it with just tape. You need to put a piece of drywall in the hole. It's fairly easy to do. I would do a search on-line for "how to patch a drywall hole", or something similar. There are tons of videos and help sites.

Definitely agree- use the drywall. I've never tried it with tape but if you plan to mount the gate again it's going to need something thicker to attach to!

Re: dry wall and fixing holes?

VERY easy fix....

get a piece of drywall from HD....

your going to have to make the hole in the wall a lil bit bigger.... ekk i know...

Follow the directions here...

Dont be scared... try it first.. if its too hard THEN you can hire someone to fix it...
