Drinking and hangovers

As I've gotten older, I just cannot drink! If I have any more than 2, I have the worst hangovers ever. Like they last the whole next day until the evening! Anyone else experience this? I never used to be like this. Sometimes i think it depends on the drink. So I'm going on vaca next week and I do plan to indulge. I cannot however feel like azz in the morning so it got me thinking:

1- What drink do you think is best to not get a hangover with?

AND

2- What's your best hangover cure?

I realize everyone is different but just curious to see what others thought!Chat Icon Chat Icon

1- Good stuff. Not sweet. I do tequila, margaritas so for me its the good tequila.

2- Lots of water in between or before bed. im too drunk to remember any of this therefore I suffer like you.

and adding..try not to mix too much. like shots in between can head into bad hangovers. that I know of too well too.

Yes, I get way worse hangovers now. The headaches are horrendous. Unfortunately I have no good advice as far as preventing or alleviating them. I just try to do my heavier drinking earlier in the evening and tone it down as the night goes on Chat Icon

Yea, margaritas are typically my drink of choice but I made a poor decision and drank way too many of them at a catering hall last weekend. It was def yellow, cheap stuff. No bueno! I was literally sick until 6pm the following day. I think the clear tequila is def a better choice. Yes, I need to remember to space them with water!

Re: Drinking and hangovers

I can't drink sweet drinks. Like sangria or certain white wines. Usually wines from New Zealand. Sounds funny bc I love them, but their kind of acidic.

I'm good with beer or white wines (not from NZ LOL) or vodka with cranberry. If I do have a sweet drink it's only 1. I just love Sangria too much.

I have to drink lots of water inbetween drinking and LOTS the next day. Coffee, water and Advil. Slow down later on it the night.

Re: Drinking and hangovers

For some odd reason I get worse hangovers and get more drunk when my period is about to come.
Strange, but true.

Also, wine gives me bad hangovers if I go over 2-3 glasses tops

Try to drink a water or club soda for every drink you have. That helps.

Don't mix.
Don't drink too much wine- if you are going to be having more than 2 or 3, stick to like vodka sodas or something.

Anything with a sweet mixer- like margaritas etc, no good for hangovers

And BIGGEST piece of advice- EAT! Make sure you eat something relatively heavy before drinking and snack during if you can. Nothing makes for a worse drunk and hangover than drinking on an empty stomach

Re: Drinking and hangovers

For every alcoholic drink, have a glass of water or seltzer.

Before you go out, leave a bottle of water on your nightstand and a bottle of Gatorade in the fridge. Have water when you get home and Gatorade in the morning.

HAVE A LANDING PAD FOR THE ALCOHOL. Never drink on an empty stomach.

I stick to whiskey or bourbon, either on the rocks or with ginger ale. Or wine - anything but Shiraz, Riesling and Moscato - those are too sweet. Beer - we all have our favorites.

Don't drink anything that's mixed with a shitload of sweet stuff. Don't mix. And there is nothing wrong with stopping and completely switching to water or seltzer while everyone else continues drinking.

Red wine gives me the most horrendous hangovers- I need to stick with white or hard alcohol.

And I agree with eating- eat something heavy before and then again after. Drinking time does not mix well with diet time!

Re: Drinking and hangovers

Ugh I totally feel you on the hangovers. As I'm getting older my hangovers are so horrible and last so long that I've literally become scared of them. I'll subconsciously stop myself from having one too many because I'm THAT afraid of the repercussions the next day.

I agree with the other posters...water, food, and non-sugary drinks are the key! DONT drink on an empty stomach. Drink a lot of water before you start drinking and always follow with water (a full bottle/glass) before bed. I stay away from wine or sugary drinks like Twisted Teas, Mike's Hard, or anything with sweet mixers. I tend to drink rum with a diet soda and that seems to sit well with me.

Re: Drinking and hangovers

My cure used to be 2 Aleve; eat a banana and/or bagel and go back to sleep for another hour or two; and when I woke up I was fine for the rest of the day.

But........now I found a new one that only Walgreens sells called Headache Relief (green box). Its Aspirin, Tylenol and Caffeine all in one. The Caffeine (which is equivalent to a cup of coffee) in the pill I think is what cures the hangover.

Try it.

I believe that is the generic version of Excedrin.

Looked it up, yes it is:

Excedrin is an over-the-counter headache pain reliever, typically in the form of tablets or caplets. It contains Tylenol (acetaminophen), aspirin, and caffeine.

I thought excedrin (or anything with acetomenaphen ) was the WORST thing to take with any kind of alcohol in your system?

That is actually true. It's bad on your liver.
I never take it for that reason because I'm a drinker

Drinking and hangovers

My hangovers are horrible. I have stopped drinking unless it is a glass of wine or two. I gave up all other drinks and I make sure I am super hydrated.

Re: Drinking and hangovers

I totally can't party anymore. The hangovers are so bad it's just not worth it to me. The best thing that helps me though is if I drink and think a hangover is possible, I chug a glass of water with some excedrin before I go to bed as a preventative measure. It definitely helps me feel better the next day.

Whoops apparently excedrin is bad to take. But in all seriousness it's what works for me. I guess it's a good thing I only go out drinking maybe once a year!

I can eat all the food in the world; which I do; and none of that prevents a full blown hangover the next day depending on what I drink. So unfortunately, taking 2 OTC pills is what I resort to. The amount of Acetominophen that is in them; from 2 pills; I dont see any more damage than a whole night of alcohol. And if you want to get rid of a headache instead of a wasting a whole day in bed; this was my suggestion; since this is is what works for me; since OP had asked.

It's fine, I just read that Advil or Ibuprofen is the safer choice. The bottle of anything with acetaminophen actual contains a warning about drinking alcohol with it and since I drink often it scares me.
Once or twice will never harm you, I just use Advil instead since it works fine for me

Drinking and hangovers

I could have written this post. The older I get, the less I am able to drink without feeling horrific the next day. I get awful hangovers.
I try to guzzle 2 bottles of water before bed, and try to eat something too. Even if I don't get the extreme nausea, I still have a pounding headache all day.

Re: Drinking and hangovers

Drink a lot of water, before, during, after. Take a couple alleve before bed.

I get terrible hangovers, I like wine, I often mix..honestly in the moment I just enjoy myself and if I feel like a dirty martini and then a couple wines I'm not smart enough to worry about the next days hangover Chat Icon

Actually, I forgot to say this earlier, but one of my friends swears by vitamin water "revive" for hangovers. It may be worth a try if you can find some!

Yes- and my father warned me about this years ago!Chat Icon

Every year in my thirties, as I got older, my hangovers got worse.

Now I am almost 43, and I rarely have more than one drink when I go out.

It is just not worth it to feel like crap for a whole day.

What used to work: eating something fattening before bed, and Excedrin.
