Here is what we did today, and it was the most amazing experience ever...

I went to walmart and bought a bunch of food, wool hats, baby food, gallons of water, juice, granola bars, cereal etc. etc. etc. I made over 80 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
a friend that grew up here but now lives in ct (fan still here) made snack bags of gold fish for kids with peanut allergies... bought tons of apple slices bags, made another 30 pbj sandwiches and over 300 bottles of water.
another friend from high school, who donated yesterday to the freeport spot, dropped off more clothes and some food.
my aunt bought cleaning supplies, fresh fruit, juice boxes, bleach (was a HUGE hit) etc.
my sister in law loaded up on socks, hats, gloves, snacks and went to starbucks and got HUGE thing of coffee, milk, sugars cups etc.
another friend came who knew the area, needed to help and do something. Has family in the areas that have lost everything.

We headed to island park because from local feedback we are hearing that LB is getting a lot of supplies, but IP hasn't really been. We stopped at the firehouse to drop the clothing off, the canned goods and the baby food, also some kid books.

Then we hit the street... 2 cars full. just pulled up to people working on their houses, asking if they would like a hot cup of coffee (the biggest item!)... some toilet paper, anything we had we offered. people were floored, one guy said fema is here, that brought us all a little chuckle. its such a sad experience, but doing it with great friends, my husband, and family was one ill never forget. These people have lost everythingggg. it is unreal. they couldn't believe we were doing it just because, they were SO THANKFUL. So many took just a little because they didn't want to take from others who also needed it, and we had a TON. We had grown men with tears in their eyes... met a sweet 5 year old who had just the clothes on her back, and received so many BIG hugs while people sobbed thanking us for what we were doing. We will be back there as often as possible, and to the other areas as well. People are going to need our help for a long time to come.
Thank you to everyone is helping in any way they can.

That brought tears to my eyes. What a beautiful thing to do! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

That's amazing!!!! I was on the phone with my uncle before - he's in the Canals section of Long Beach which is completely devastated. Their house is uninhabitable and will prob take about nine months to repair. He said that although there's a lot of help in LB, very hard to get to it if you no longer have cars (which many in LB don't) or have one with no gas. The fact that you went "door to door" is amazing and exactly what's needed!

I have donated some items and want to volunteer my time tomorrow without having to travel too far. Ideas? I'm in westbury

If you're interested, and it's within a do-able distance for you, there's a large Red Cross shelter in the gym at Nassau Community College. My friend has been volunteering there & said they're accepting walk-in help. I'm going to volunteer there as soon as I have the gas to make it from Queens.

Donations, charities, my experience

We are blessed to have the support of family and friends. However, we currently have no gas and all of our local stores are closed. I want to thank everyone who has been helping out and donating. Even if I don't get a single item, the fact that people care helps me to go on and rebuild.

The fact is we can't just hop in a car and buy stuff. Regardless of financial situation. We lost cars, haveno gas and are stuck in our houses for fear of looters.

So, when people came around just giving out work gloves and contractor bags, bleach etc. THIS was so helpful and appreciated. And of course ready to eat food is amazing. Its hard figuring out what to eat that doesn't have to be refrigerated and can only be made on a stovetop.

I think that's the biggest thing.... you cant jump in your car and go buy stuff.

Here's my experience, if it helps you see the other side.
I lost my entire home 2 months ago, we literally walked away with the clothes on our backs. donations were HUGE because it saved me from running out for every little thing. You dont have the time, money or energy for all of it. You are busy doing so many other things. I was sooo grateful for all the help.

However, many people took it as an opporunity to clean our their house. I rcvd a bag full of teenage clothes with 1 pair of red thongs. old dirty shoes with holes in them, broken toys. Bags full of old stained clothes. Even though the notice said 2T and 4T kids. I was given bags of clothes that were 12/14 kids. It was a part time job going thru bags of clothes that we could not use, then dispose of them/ redonate them.

Give what is needed to Hurrican Sandy victims, not what is sitting around your house. Every fire station I passed has a sign that says NO MORE CLOTHES.

I had 2 brand new kids jackets I was going to donate. but now that they say no clothes, I will probably go to target and get wipes, diapers, toilet paper, paper towels.

My friend and I went to Raindew and Home Depot this morning and loaded up carts with buckets, push brooms, cases of Bleach, flash lights, flood lights, contractor bags, working gloves, masks, ponchos, socks, hats, scraves, gloves, tarps, duct tape.

Both stores gave us discounts on everything - we spent about $1000 out of our pockets and then drove to the Rockaways and dropped it all off.

They were very grateful for it all because people are trying to clean out what they can and need all this stuff.

Congratulations! What a lovely and generous thing you two did.

While I can't spend $1000, I am planning to do what you just did two days from now - on Wednesday, when I go up island to the doctors. I will be in Commack for my appointment, where should I go with donations of work and cleaning items?

I live way out east and really don't know any of the towns that have been damaged. I'd thought I'd just try to find the firehouse in Lyndenhurst and ask there, but is the real need farther up?

Re: Donations, charities, my experience

A lot of people don't need clothing, etc, but it IS hard to get to stores and get immediate things they need.

I did bring soem random things. I only had an hour, so inaddition to water, canned food, paper towels and all of the unopened cleaning products in my house, I gave all of the unopened toiletries, so some of it was little hotel bottles (I don't know how bad the need is), and I gave a bunch of bars of Mickey soap I didn't realize I had. I thought maybe it would cheer someone up. I hope it's not perceived badly.

I just baked cookies for my mom's friend because I didn't know what else to do.
