dog swallowed something
my 7 month old pup swollowed a big piece of "edible and digestible" teething ring. he is throwing up and having little squirts of diarrhea..... he threw up a big size piece aout the size of my pinky but i feel there is more in his tummy. what should i do? he is eating dinner and i put a little bit of olive oil in food to help move along the excretion process. does he need to go to 24 hour vet clinic?

He may not be able to pass the remaining pieces, so you should call your vet, especially since he's throwing up and having loose stool.

Re: dog swallowed something
If it's edible and digestible your dog should be ok. My dog has thrown up those edible and digestible teething items as well. I would see large chunks of it in the vomit. Sometimes it would change the color or the consistency of the stool. So we stopped giving them to our dogs. I don't think something is wrong, I just think your dog didn't fully digest it and it upset his stomach. But I do believe it will fully digest and nothing bad will happen. You should still call your vet, but just letting you know this has happened to us on numerous occasions so I just stopped giving my dogs these edible teething items. HTH

he stopped throwing up but still has squirty diarrhea when we walk him... i will give him some rice but will no longer give him the teething rings (although he had like 35 in his lifetime) i think he is getting older when he devours stuff more and doesnt take time to chew... i feel that he stopped vomitted so i guess the pieces left in his tummy are digesting.. i will call vet tomorrow if there is still a prob. thanks all

I think in a day or two he will be fine. Again if you are very concerned you can always call an emergency vet and they will advise you on the phone. I know a number to one where they give decent advice when you call. Let me know if you want it.
Yes, my dog too doesn't chew them enough and i think that's why they would upset his stomach. But if you look at the ingredients, it is nothing that can hurt him (usually made of cornstarch). So I would just let his stomach settle, watch what you feed him, make sure he gets fluids, etc and his stool should go back to normal when things settle.

Re: dog swallowed something
even though it says digestible... it doesnt mean that if he swallowed a big peice whole that he can definelty pass it through thte intestines. and if there is a blockage even though its plastic they might be able to still tell with and xray , they might have to give him barium, it depends

Re: dog swallowed something
thank you for ur response. it is not made of any plastic, nylon or rubber. just crude protein and digestible stuff... its a n-bone teething ring. he hasnt vomitted since early last eve so i think we are in the clear, ate dinner and breakfast (chick and rice) and had 3 bouts of little diarrhea. no more vomitting. i;ll bring him to vet if it doesnt solidify by tomorrow...
wouldnt it be eventually digested (not pass whole) just digest over a couple days?
he may need a barium b/c after his diarrhea he keeps pushing like more needs to come out.... oh my little furbaby

I would think it would eventually be digested. My little dog has a bad habit of swallowing food nuggets whole and biting large peices and not chewing. We have never seen any digestible item whole in his stool. The stomach would eventually dissolve it if it is digestible. Things like bones, which are not digestible, are very dangerous b/c they don't pass and don't fully dissolve but food substances should. He will keep pushing when he tries to poop, but eventually when the loose stool settles, he will stop pushing. When my dogs have loose stool they push forever too. They never need an enema. Certainly never give your dog anything, leave that up to your vet.

Re: dog swallowed something
If you're not sure, I would say contact your vet. Let them decide the course of action that should be taken.
Good luck!
