Doesn't make any sense..can't be the final #

So my DH and I bought a new construction house in Westbury spring 2007...Of course for what seemed like a good buy then and then the economy dropped and now it seems like an astronomical number! (I guess we bought a year too early...oh well..but we love our house)

But since it was a New Constr. the taxes were not fully assessed for our first year and it just keeps getting higher and higher..I am hoping this is at it's max..bec we pay A LOT more than ANYONE I know in surrounding areas!

It is "only" a 50x100 plot (was built on a 100x100 plot that the builder broke up into two and made two separate houses/plots!)

we now pay about $15k in taxes! (YES you are reading that number correctly) I could see if we lived in the best school districts, but we dont! I thought we were in the Carle place school district, but we DEF are not! That is another story..that sucks!!! for another post!! HAHA

Other people told me bec we are so close to the shopping area (RF & Source malls) that it also should be lower!?!?

We are in the process of appealing with those lawyer firms that fight it for you, but apparently you have to do it a full year in advance so it wont even be looked at til NEXT years taxes!?!

The whole thing doesnt make any sense!?! why are we paying so freaking much!?

2 words, NEW CONSRUCTION!

My brother basically did a spot build in a developed neighborhood. He also pays $15,000. He has spoken with a ton of the neighbors and looked into it and the highest that anyone pays in his entire development is $9,000.
After his house was done, his taxes went up in stages. He was told it was so he did not get a big hit all at once by the town. I believe it took about 2-3 years to get to the full amount. That being said, everyones taxes go up every year. I have been in my house for 11 years and on average, my taxes have gone up about $500 per yearChat Icon

Exactly! New Construction homes have very high taxes - usually $14k plus.

I believe it! my taxes are almost 10k yup for 60x100 in salisbury and we are certainly not new construction. the taxes have jumped out of control in the past 3 years. Its from the school tax. we are east meadow/bowling green and clarke.

edited to say welcome to the area!!
we love it!

Does the school taxes get determined by how good the schools are??? Because being 5 houses (literally) from the Carle Place schools,(which is a real tease) Westbury schools are not that great! I would think that mine would be less than theirs..but they are not...

Sorry for the ignorance, but I am from Queens, so this whole LI taxes thing is new to me! UGHH

My cousin built a new construction in Huntington 2 years ago and his taxes were 22k. In Huntington! My mom lives 3 blocks away and pays 7K in the same school district...same size property too...

I would try to appeal them but this is the downfall with having something new. Chat Icon

it sounds like you are westbury school district and believe it or not the school is eh but the area westbury itself is still very expensive. there are so many different sections of the "estates" and I think I know where you are about that area is $$$$$$$. beautiful areas. parts of old westbury homes are westbury school district too they send them to jericho I think and or private.
im really not sure if thats how they do the taxes. but I think in your case its more of a new construction tax.
