Does your toddler use a plate or bowl when eating?

I give James all of his meals in his high chair. I've been putting the food directly on the tray. If I know something is going to be messy, I'll put it on the fork for him, hand it to him, he'll eat it and hand the fork back for the duration of the meal. (hello... enable much? Chat Icon Chat Icon ) yesterday morning, he was pointing at the plate that I had all of his cut up waffle on and saying "meeee meeeee" - I put the plate (paper) on his tray and he did wonderfully using the fork and dipping his waffle in the syrup and fruit puree on the plate.

When feeding your toddler, do you give them the plate, or do you just put the food on the high chair tray? I bought some of those suction-bottom bowls to try out for later on.

Since Kaydyn was about 2 we put her food either in a bowl or on a plate.

Ainsley is 15 months now and we still put everything on her high chair tray. We are going to start giving her utensils and letting her try. I have a feeling she would just throw a bowl or plate at this point.

Once I knew DS wasn't going to toss his plate, he got a plate. I used a bunch of different forks/spoons until we found which worked best...and you know what - one spoon works good for yogurt, and another for peas so...there is no one answer.

I also used to put it on his tray and tell him what it was so he knew what he was eating. When I forget he says, "this is my x and this is my y".

I say go for it!

DS has been using the suction bowls for things like yogurt and cereal for a while and it's been going well... so now I give him regular bowls. He also had been using the special plates with the ring around them, but lately I have been giving him regular plates. It did backfire once when he knocked the plate over while reaching for something on the table, but the are Corelle and didn't breakChat Icon

Thanks guys! He eats like a champ with the fork and spoon, I'm just worried about him tossing the plates and bowls overboard, that's why we haven't started giving them to him yet. Our dog, though, I'm sure would love it. Chat Icon Chat Icon

We use the oxo tot plate which doubles as a bowl. LOVE it! Love the spoon and fork set as well.

We also got the suction bowls but DS is able to grab them and pull them off anyway so it's not so effective.

at home we use the suction bowl thingy jammy and i love it! well...loved it, until DS figured out how to unsuction it! for some reason at home he'll throw the plate, but if we're out to eat he MUST have a plate or he'll throw a tantrum.

I always gave DD food on a plate or bowl but the last 2 months she dumps it out onto her tray so i have just been putting it directly onto her tray. I wish she would go back to suing her plate/bowl...

Same here. Most of the time she is okay with it. Some days she wants nothing to do with it and dumps it all on her tray Chat Icon

I always use a plate or a bowl, whichever works best with the food I'm giving him. When he's finished or doesn't want anymore, he hands me the plate. He's never thrown it.

I always used a plate. Never put the food directly on the tray, unless it was something like Cheerios.

Re: Does your toddler use a plate or bowl when eating?

Emmy has always recieved her food in the appropriate dinnerware...plate or bowl. I started giving kid silverware t her at 1yr and now at 17 almost 18 months she can use both the fork and spoon. At the end of mealtime she will start to pull the food off and then throw her plateChat Icon we're working on saying All DOne when she's really all done

Always in a plate or bowl here.

Unless its literally finger food snack then we would put it on her tray when she was younger.

Nowadays tho, always plate and/or bowl.

Re: Does your toddler use a plate or bowl when eating?

I give DS all his food on a plastic or paper plate. He's very good about not throwing it - unless he's done. Once he's done, he tries to throw EVERYTHING! I just lift up the tray off the highchair and clean up from there. BUT I only give him a little bit of food at a time and keep adding to his plate. If I give him all his dinner at once, he tends to play with it.

DS also eats with a fork or spoon, but sometimes. Most times, he holds it in his hands and eats with his fingers, but that's a whole different story!

Always a plate and bowl. She's in daycare full time and has breakfast and lunch there. That is how it's served there, and I do the same at home.
