does this color coordination go? *UPDATE* With Pics!!
i am afraid of the outcome of this answer
but if i have a Navy blue carpet. and want to paint the walls Chocolate brown and have a light blue accent wall.. will that go?
i just assumed it would because of a lighter shade of the "blue" category.
************************** UPDATE----- 7/8/09
well we did it!! some pics!

Re: does this color coordination go?
I think it would go, but the navy rug and the chocolate on the walls will make this room very dark. Is that the look you are going for? How big is the room? How much natural light is coming into the room? This is rug just any area rug or wall-to-wall carpet?

well its the front room .. (dining room) with direct sunlight.. we have a navy carpet.. not area rug. and currently the walls are beige.. but i want something different.. every other room is that same beige color. so i was going to do the light blue.accent wall . because of the room being too dark.
its so hard because of the navy carpet that is throwing everything off.. not many color choices!! ugh

ok, how about this. Go get paint chips of different lighter blue colors. Find different shades of lighter blues and bring those home. Look at the blue chips against the navy carpet and see what compliments the carpet. Than my thought is to paint three walls the lighter blue color you pick and the accent wall is the Chocolate Brown color. Than you can use Chocolate Brown and white decor for your accessories. HTH!

I hope these help to start you thinking about what you can do.
Do you already have DR furniture? What color is it?

Re: does this color coordination go?
I personally think it would end-up being too dark....
also, substantially different shades of the same color (dark and light blue) may compete with one another rather than complement.
Instead of beige, why not a light grey? It would make the room look very different from the rest of the beige walls in the house (cool vs warm), yet the grey would complement the navy well and the room would remain bright and airy.

Re: does this color coordination go?
I would do a very light blue on 3 walls and the wall that gets hit with the most light from the window do the chocolate brown, it doesnt matter what accent wall you choose, then go with more chocolate and dark blue accents to even out flow of the room.

by the way, what does your dining set look like? I presume it's wood... is it stained? dark? light? or painted?
Also, what style is it? traditional? contemporary? I think a pic of the furniture would really help posters give you great advice. there are a lot of amateur interior decorators on this board with good taste

I totally agree with gray... It's just as neutral as beige!

Re: does this color coordination go?
in the pic, it looks like the seats have a blue/grey/beige/cream material?
Since the room isn't flooded with light from the window, I think very light grey, or a rich cream color would work well. You could also get a light grey that has a hint of blue in it......

Re: does this color coordination go?
OK the Navy represents your carpet, the beige represents your beige wall that is already there and in your LR and the new light gray could be the new color in the room. Or you could go lighter with the gray on the paint chip. The gray sort of looks like a lighter blue, so maybe you are still getting the idea you had, but with a little bit of a twist. Than you can find some art work that has gray, navy and cream/beige in it and it will pull the rooms together. Maybe some beige/cream pieces in the DR to pull from the beige in the other rooms. HTH!
And I found this pic from ThisYoungHouse.com
link
This is a navy & gray rug for inspiration.

Re: does this color coordination go?
i need to go off the beaten path here... yellow...
i know, i know, weird. but, it certainly would "match" and be a complete and total change!
hey Jenn, can you do a color pallette for that? let me see if i can... (i don't know how to attach the photo in a post. i am going to try it.)
eta: not a room, but still color inspiration...

Re: does this color coordination go?
Hadn't thought about yellow. Deanna, yellow would be a nice pop of color. Navy carpet, gray on the walls and than use the yellow for the pop of a color. You could put one thing that is yellow in the LR (like a vase maybe) to make the rooms coordinate. Great idea Rachel.

Re: does this color coordination go?
i would ONLY do an accent wall in yellow. my kitchen (entire thing) is yellow, while I LOVE it, some people don't ... your DH might have an issue with yellow, but i think it is soothing, cheery and FUN!
Watch the yellow you use. the picture of the wicker chair of the yellow and blue is my absolute FAV!!
good luck!
