Does stress really affect TTC?

Just curious? Everyone says, relax, stress doesn't help but i mean, is it medically proven?

Re: Does stress really affect TTC?

i might be wrong but maybe it has to do with "O"? Like if you are really stressed maybe it will delay ovulation and you may not know it? Thinking you're in your O window when you really aren't?

Re: Does stress really affect TTC?

The simple answer is YES!

Being stressed out can cause all your hormones and brain chemicals to go crazy. Causing ovulation to be delayed or even stop. It can also cause havoc in other areas of your body......

100% - it was the 1st thing my nurse practioner told me. stress effects your entire cycle. she has had patients, and including herself that didn't get pregnant until they literally weren't paying attention/stopped trying persay.

Re: Does stress really affect TTC?

i never thought about that really...but i know it effects pregnancy (maybe not medically proven, but i have 2 friends that miscarried early on during stressful times of their lives Chat Icon )

I know everyone says when you arent "trying" getting pregnant is easier...I wanted to follow that philosophy but one month in and i caved and got an opk!

Re: Does stress really affect TTC?

I definitely think so, for some. Since going off BCP I noticed much longer cycles when something stressful at work was going on...not even sure I ovulated at those times (I wasn't temping).

It doesn't help... but "just relax" is harder to do that it sounds.

i don't think that stress is the be all and end all, i just think that it CAN be a contributing factor - esp when theres nothing else medically going on

Re: Does stress really affect TTC?

I think it can play a big role. The only month I did not track anything and really didn't care about TTC was the month I got my BFP. I credit the lack of stress and all the wine I was drinking that month.

Re: Does stress really affect TTC?

Definitely. I am not TTC, but I chart, and I have a very regular cycle, but when I have a lot of stress, my cycle gets really off. I might O late, or what would also really hurt TTC is I might have EWCM, it might go away and THEN I might O late (based on temping and LP). So I know at the most basic level it can definitely have an impact.

Re: Does stress really affect TTC?

if one more person (coughcoughMIL) tells me to RELAX, it will happen.. im gonna lose it. i have a DIAGNOSIS and so does DH so i dont think stress is much of a contributing factor when we have actual problems. blehhh.Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree with this too..when people don't know if you have issues on either or both sides, it can be tough to explain that "relaxing" may not be the only factor.

Re: Does stress really affect TTC?

See herew is the thing....and again just the thoughts from a old ttc lol

If u have IF like myself, like a previous poster said, relaxing won't help me do shit

If stress does affect ur cycle and I believe it can and even if it makes u ovulate a day later is it making those sperm swim slower or making them not meet up?

And as for finally relaxing and then getting pregnant if it had been years then I would say yea maybe it worked but if it was under a year I would say u just fell into the range bc it can take up to a year for normal healthy couples to conceive

Again jmo....just over 2 yrs I have been told to relax 10000 times and it drives me up a flucking wall

Nope - I really do not. Everyone has some sort of stress or anxiety and people get pregnant all the time (since the beginning of time). The ONLY time I think stress can affect a pregnancy is extreme conditions, loss of a parent, depression, etc.

Can I add one more thing - sex in general is a relaxer. Especially, if you O, so I really do not think it makes a difference whether you enjoyed the sex or not, as to whether you get pregnant.

I agree but i think the instances of stress need to be even greater than that. I cant think of any examples though. Ive been pregnent before and the months i got pregnant i was more stressed than ive ever been.

Re: Does stress really affect TTC?

I've heard this many times from lots of people. My dr also told me that stress can make your uterus contract, which prevents an egg being able to implant properly.

I kind of believe it bc Cortisol (the hormone that is released during stress) messes up lots of things in our bodies. Can even make us fat and lower our immune systems.

yep. Same here. One month i had to have my wisdom tooth removed so we werent ttc that month..well, dh got in the mood we did it once and bam i was pregnant. That month i wasnt even thinking about ttc...no tracking, opks, teas, cought suppresents..nada. And we only had sex once that month..go figure. Unfortunately it ended in a MC but i do believe stress plays a role..
