I live in a community and I always believed in pride of ownership. Unfortunately, life happens people's time and finances change. For me we bought the house of a landscaper so we have nice property and I insisted on no trees. My DH does all the work. Just cannot afford a landscaper.
I think as long as you cut your grass and keep the outside clean then their is not much more you ask. $$$$ can be spent on better things when owning a house that is for sure and I learning that very quickly.

....So, yes, we're one of those people who have crap lawns now! I hate it, but we can't do anything about it until the fall.
ITA!!! We never had a gorgeous lawn, cause when we bought the house recently, it was DEAD! Now, we tried buying the stuff to help it grow nicely but because of the terrible heat, the weeds took over and even when we mow and edge, a day later,the weeds grow....... like weeds  I am sure our neighbors think we can do more, but unless we are out there everyday or higher a landscaper(which is not possible at this moment in time), our yard is not going to look great. To top it off, we still don't have flowers, nice siding or an updated front door, because we are putting our $$ toward the inside of the house.
i'm with you on this one. we purchased recently and the grass was dead. weeds grew everywhere. costing us thousands of dollars just to put new dirt and seeds to even out the grass and get rid of the rocks the previous owner had on the lawn to park his trailer or RV or whatever it was...... so for now its not nice but eventually when we can put some more money into it (would like to get rid of all the bushes in the front of our house and start new, etc). it will look better.

in answer to your question- Yes
and now for an embarassing story:
we bought a home in a nice neighborhood- the home was Dis Gus Ting. we ripped everything out, its been down to the studs for months now, and are waiting for a permit to begin work inside, and ultimately outside.
we dont live in the house, and dont really go by there
we went yesterday to pick up any mail, and Holy Jeez it looked Horrid! the weeds in the front (all the grass etc is dead) are waist high! and the backyard is Beyond frightening.
my dad had gone and cut the grass a few times but the lawn mower died because that stuff is just not grass
i was so embarassed to see how high the weeds/ "grass" were- i asked a neighbor to give me the number of her landscaper and havent heard back yet
so, i am admitting that i am that lady in our neighborhood. its embarassing and i know is a problem- im working on it!!! i apologize to my neighbors !

Right now, we are on eof those houses too. Our grass is completely dead. We have hay. We gave up for this year and will do a power raking and grass seed in the fall and once spring hits we will try and keep up with the watering.

This is our house sometimes, I am sad to say. Its not the way I like it, but we can't afford a landscaper. With two toddlers, and working at home, I do not have time during the day to mow the lawn, weed, etc.
DH comes home late, we eat dinner, put the kids to bed, and then it is dark out.
The only time we really have to do anything is the weekends, and we like to spend those days together as a family.
So yes, even though we are both "able bodied" sometimes the grass is overgrown, and there are too many weeds. The garbage can may sit outside all day until DH brings it in when he comes home from work. I am sorry if this bothers people, but for right now, the outside of our house is not our #1 priority.

I'll give you my perspective:
DH and I can't afford a landscaper. He works LONG hours and can't mow the lawn in the dark. We almost never have the same days off. He actually has to hope to get home early just to mow the lawn while it's still light out.
We do our best but our lawn has been quite overgrown this summer and there is really nothing we can do about it. It looks awful some days but we just cannot help that.

at the moment we feel like we are the Outcasts in our new neighborhood. from what our house first looked like when we first moved in , we have DONE SOOOOO much work to it, but it just isn't enough compared to everyone around us. We mow our lawn and make sure the grass is green and we make sure it looks good for the eyes but we haven't gone crazy with landscaping or making it really home yet. The inside needed lots of work and the only thing big we did this summer was put up a new fence which cost us an arm and a leg.
we still get compliments from the neighbors saying what a wonderful job we are doing, to keep up the good work, but we know deep down inside they are itching us to keep spending money to make it look like theres lol , across the street nieghbor even offered to help plant trees and shrubs and stuff....next summer...
this was our first summer and im pretty impressed! lol
This is us too... Although it's our second summer in the house. We moved in to a yard that was so incredibly overgrown that it will still be a long time until our yard is even close to as nice as the neighbors' yards.
Of course I feel like a lot of the "progress" is pretty ugly too, because we are doing the work ourselves, and both work full time (DH on weekends in the summer too), so the in between stages of cutting down/digging up/filling in sit there for weeks at a time. We just hope that our neighbors recognize that it IS progress and can bear with us the weeks we just don't have time to work on it.
When we took down the carport and started cutting down the hedges people would walk by and say "hey, there's a house back there!" so I guess it's already better than before. We do get compliments on the hard work though from some people, so we know they appreciate our efforts.
