Does anyone else find this ridiculous... remote learning
I need to know if anyone else finds this ridiculous or is it just me ...
My school district was allowing students who opt to in school learning to do remote when needed. So some parents like me would let them log on remote say if they had a drs appointment. This way instead of missing a full day they can go on in between. Some people if their children were not feeling well would have them stay home and log on.
They recently decided to change it that if you opt on you can no longer log on remote and receive credit unless it’s covid related. (Note that the same teacher who is teaching in the classroom has to log on remotely anyway for the kids that are remote still)
Their reasoning people were taking advantage and taking their kids on vacation and letting them log on remote or just staying home cause they felt like it.
My argument is why deny any child a chance of an education when there is an opportunity for the child to miss it and my other argument is who the helll cares where a child is logged in from as long as they are logged in paying attention and getting their work done.
To me it just sounds like someone is bitter that a child has the opportunity to be away and still do their work and they don’t. Clearly just my intake that was not said to me
So am I the only one who thinks it’s ridiculous that they have changed the policy just because some people were taking vacations and letting their kids logon remote??!

First question is, are they not letting them log on completely or just that if they are not physically in school and choose to stay home & log on instead they will get marked absent but still allowed to do classwork? Big difference!
I don't disagree with the school, only because in our district you are either remote learning or in school 5 days.....it's not pick or choose when it's convenient for each child/parent. If my Son is home, he is still able to log on and do his schoolwork so he is not behind, but he is still marked absent.

It stems from people taking advantage of it.
There’s a lot of behind the scenes stuff we don’t see.
More work for the teacher and can be distracting for the class.
Imagine having to every morning get a list of kids who are remote and now you have to upload stuff and tweak your lesson....bc little Johnny is in Disney?
Is the child there or is it a parent doing the work?
It takes a couple families to ruin something that could be nice when your child has an excused reason to miss class.
ETA...I know at the upper levels our district had issues with kids not wanting to go to school and being at friends houses logged on together.

My district did the same thing. I think the reason is that so few kids are doing fully remote. So, if a teacher doesn't have any students fully remote, he/she doesn't even have to log on and can just teach to the class like normal. If there are kids in quarantine, then the teacher would be notified and he/she would log in and teach to the class and the screen.

That is absolutely ridiculous. Because our school day is still not full time and because I drive my kids (at different times) to make extra room on the bus for those that need it more, I use the remote option as needed if I can't get them to school because of appointments, schedules, etc. Why should the school care? Besides, I think MOST parents aren't taking advantage of this as MOST want their kids in school all day as opposed to being remote.
ETA - At the middle school level my DD being remote, if needed, is no more work for the teacher and doesn't disrupt anything. She just hops on with the remote kids and gets her work done.
With the elementary, it doesn't really affect the teacher there either as there is always a full remote class, it would just be on me to print out what DS needs from her site so he can keep up.
Moving in and out of remote is really not a big deal but in our district there is ALWAYS a full set of kids remote, every day in every grade.

So to answer questions without quoting everyone. Teachers still need to log in so if they have 5 or 10 what difference does it make?!!
They now can log in but they will be marked absent at first they said they couldn’t at all but either way I find it unfair if a child is logging in they can’t receive credit for doing so.
Also the excuse told to me was because kids were taking vacations and going remote. My answer is who cares??!!
They are it checking who opted to do for remote where they’re actually learning from. So those kids can be on vacation and that’s fine but others can’t.
I will also add I suggested if a child provides a drs note proving they were at the dr they should still get credit then if they log on remotely!

I had heard that some of these new restrictions had to do with older kids whose grades "count" consistently staying remote on test days and having drastically different grades than usual on those days. I don't personally know or know of anyone who has done this, but, wow.
Policing dishonest people always makes trying to do the right thing harder.

Sorry, I see where the school is coming from.
Having kids in and out of school for trivial things like inconvenient schedules and vacations is disruptive and sets a bad precedent.
I'm sure the policy is a result of parents taking advantage of the remote option, and I understand why the school put a stop to it.

I want to say in my district that if you choose to go in 5 days a week then there is no flip flopping to remote. Either you are remote 5 days a week or in school 5 days a week.( I believe you can log on to remote but it will be an unexcused absence. I am sure that in the case of Covid that is a different story but not for dr appointments, vacation, things like that )

Remote learning should be all or nothing. We have seen 2-3 kids laughing together hanging out while doing “remote” (when they were supposed to be quarantined...) or outside on their trampolines and asking if the class wanted to see them do a trick. Or kids pop in to brag they are on a beach down south and then log off. They waste everyone’s time and it ruins it for the kids who truly are remote and opted in and take it seriously.

Our district is basically the same. They will though allow "one off" days, such as for a doctors appointment or a mental health day. The will though keep track and if a family is abusing it, they will move the child to full remote or full in school with no options. This is just for secondary. Elementary students do not have that option. If they are out for the day, they are out just like in a normal year. They can't just jump into one of the remote classes because not every class is learning the same things at the same time and it would be useless.

Agree 100%. Our district is all or nothing
You are either remote full time or you are in school full time- that's it.

My school district would allow you to log in remotely if you have opted for in person school but you would still be marked as absent. I was told that there is too much liability in allowing students who should be in school to be allowed to opt in remotely at will. I can understand this as the school district is responsible to know where the students are.

This is different for those kids if I was the teacher I would log them off myself and marked them absent because they aren’t learning.

In our district, for the elementary level, you do not have a choice. You are either Full Remote, or Full In School. The only time you are allowed to log in remote is if you are on Covid quarantine for the week due to exposure. There is no flip flopping at all.

Clearly I am the minority and that’s fine.
I still don’t see the big deal if a child is fully engaged and learning where they are learning from Should not make a difference.
Also no teacher is being inconvenienced because they have to log on anyway so if a child has a dr appointment and there’s an opportunity for the Child to still be able to lean there is no reason they can’t log on remotely and receive credit.
The fact that there are allowing it and stopped simply because people were not actually home when remote is ridiculous to me and a better answer should have been given.
On top of the fact that I was told they were required to mark a child present according to NYS rule but now they are saying they misinterpreted the rule.
So I feel like I am being lied too or the school has no idea on what they are doing which gets me also equally annoyed/mad

ITA. I feel like remote should be all or nothing (with the exception of if a child is sick or quarantined.). I don't understand why the hybrid model is even a thing. Either you're okay with your kids going into school or you're not.

Teacher perspective:
I hate when students who are suppose to be IN class log on virtually. I plan my week based on when students will be physically in school. So, Cohort 1 does an activity in school, while Cohort 2 does asynchronous work. When students who should be in person are at home, they miss out on the activity since most of the activities can not be reproduced online due to the materials required. I actually stopped using this model because so many of my students were choosing to be virtual when they felt like it. This meant I scaled back all hands on learning because I do not have the time to develop 3 different lessons for one class period.
Also it is difficult to manage 25 students online. None of my students will turn on their cameras and I can not require them to do so. I much prefer 15-20 students in person and 5-10 at home.
Luckily, most of my students are now back in person so I am beginning more hands on activities again. I pray virtual learning can be eliminated next year.

This is really common.
We are still hybrid but if you remote in on a day you are supposed to be in person, for a non-covid reason, you are considered absent.
In the beginning of the year - they allowed students to switch back and forth from hybrid to full remote at any time but they changed that for the second half of the year (so they could bring more kids back). You can opt to go full remote at any time but, you can only opt in to in to go in person (which so far has been hybrid) in the middle or end of the quarter.
We switch to full in person next week for the first time all year. There is still a full remote option but they are pushing to get everyone back. DS2's class had 3 kids who were full remote all year and they will be back in person on Monday with the rest of the class. The online link will be open for those who can't attend school for covid related reasons.

I agree with the school.
I don’t see why you couldn’t just behave like this was pre-Covid and either pull your kid out of school early/send them late or just miss a day. It happens and it’s no big deal.

TBH, there are a number of logistical issues that arise in the classroom when students who are supposed to be there in person are attending remotely for unapproved reasons. I agree with the school having a strict policy.

I am doing this but the point is why when they are online anyway? If child doesn’t have to miss work then why not let them.

I have spoken to numerous teachers (who are teachers right now, not in the past assuming they can actually relate to what this is like) and they all have said that the more kids that are remote the more difficult it is. They have technology issues etc. This might not be true as the kids get older but definitely in the younger grades. I agree with the schools. At this point you're either in school or your not. And I don't think remote should even be an option next year.

I agree. From my experience remote is not even close to being in the classroom. It's 100% not the same.
Just the fact that they are home, in their house, already puts it at a disadvantage- distractions, not having the teacher right in front of them, etc
And I'm sure it's a huge PIA for the teachers as well.
Hopefully next year this nonsense will be a thing of the past.
School is one thing that needs to be in person.
