Does anyone else...

hear of someone they know - family/ friend getting pregnant or having a baby - and without even knowing their name choices yet you get possessive of the name/s you've chosen for your LO when you aren't even pregnant yet?? I am doing this ALL the time with DH's family and some of my friends... and I know if they HAPPEN to choose the same name I can use the name too, if I haven't changed my mind 37 times by then, but I dont want to be thought of as a copy-cat or unoriginal! Cause I know that was MY name!!

PS - my DH thinks I'm insane.

Absolutely! This actually happened to me last week. DH came home and told me that his manager and his wife just had a baby girl. My first reaction was "Aww, congrats to him!" then he says, "He name her Victoria" then I got really upset and said, "But thats our name!!" haha...DH just looked at me and laughed. It felt like he stole it from us

hahahahah funny story. my sister chose a name for her daughter, that sounds very familiar to the name that DH and I always loved. Now it's ruined and we can't name our daughter the name we always loved!! I was soooo mad. My sister said if we weren't going to use the name we wanted, then she would pick it. I told her we were still using it, so she named her daughter the close, but not actual name. we aren't using the name we loved, so sucksss for her!

Example (not using the real names, for lurkers, but my above explanation even confuses me!)

the name me and DH loved FOREVER: marie
the name my sister chose: maria
she told us she really wanted marie, but wouldn't pick it if we were still using it, so i said we were bc i didn't want her to take "my" name. her DD name is maria. we are not naming our DD marie.

yes! i won't tell anyone my baby names for that reason...i dont want anyone to steal them!

LOL... that happened to my sisters friend... one of her friends loved the name Kailey and then another friend got pregnant and stole the name lol

oh well


ETA: And my sister in law took her dd's name from my sister... she said for years that she wanted this name... and my sil decided to use it...

I have a boys name I *love* and definitely want to use if we have a boy (DH likes it too). I plan on using it unless immediate family "steals" it first. Friends? oh well, we'll probably use it anyway

As far as girls go, there's a middle name I'm set on that nobody will steal (and if they do, it's just a middle name so we will use it too) and we don't have a girls name picked out.

I'm torn about whether its better to "claim" your name or not, but I feel like no matter what you say you have no "right" to call dibs on a name until you are pregnant with that gender

DH and I had a name for a girl picked out for FOUR years. We told no one about it in the hopes that no one would steal it. Of course someone in the family had a baby two months ago and took the name without knowing it was "ours". Same spelling and all! I probably wont tell people my new names but sometimes I wonder if it is better off. Maybe I wouldn't have to be trying to pick out a new name now!

I know it's silly and I have no "claim" to any name at all... but the name that DH and I miraculously agree upon for a is very uncommon and we both really like it. It satisfies each of our criteria for a girls name (me - uncommon, him - italian ) and if someone were to pick it ahead of us, I'd be bummed - that's all. But who knows... I could end up with all !
