Doctor Question

I'm new to this so I'm just trying to figure out if this is "normal"...

The few times I have tried to ask my doctor a question, I call and speak to a secretary, leave my question as a message for the doctor, and then I get called back by the secretary. I am starting to find this frustrating. I know that doctors are very busy and I'm probably asking all the same questions that every other patient has asked, but I am starting to wonder if it is normal for a doctor to have her assistants call you back with answers to your questions. I don't go in for another two weeks for my first appointment since I found out I was pregnant, and I feel very strange having no direct contact with my doctor at all to this point. Is this typical or should I start looking for a new MD?

Thanks ladies!!

Re: Doctor Question

Dr called me back the one time I needed him to. Usually an RN picks up and I feel comfortable talking to them.

Re: Doctor Question

An RN can ask you a question but if you request to speak to a doctor then the doctor should call you back. Also, I wouldn't talk to the sec I would request the nurse or doctor only.

The few times I called, a RN would answer my question/call me back. Even when I was in the early stages of labor, she would call me. I felt comfortable with her though, I kind of knew her at that point. But, if you feel uncomfortable, demand to speak with your doc, that's what they get paid the big bucks for.

Same for me. I always speak to the nurse. The one time I asked to speak to the doctor about a more serious concern he called me back.

Re: Doctor Question

i leave a message with the secy and the dr always calls me back to answer my question. If you really would like to speak to the dr make that certain when you leave the message.

Re: Doctor Question

When I call, I specifically call and ask for a specific person whether it be the OB nurse, PA or DR. The person I ask for always calls back.

Re: Doctor Question

Mine called me back as well.

But I have seen it where the nurse/sec comes in and asks the doc their opinion so they can call back to get a more timely response instead of making the patient wait until the end of their day...

Re: Doctor Question

I would request a call back from the dr. They are getting a lot of $$ for having you as a patient, and the dr should start realizing that.
