Do You Think This is Weird Timing?
A close co-worker is PG and due in March. A couple of us were talking yesterday about planning her work shower.
Our friend mentioned to us that her sisters are hosting a shower for her on Feb 14th - we thought the date odd but didn't say anything.
So today we got invitations to her shower - get this - Sat, Feb 14th - 6:30 at night! None of us are going to go and I feel bad, even though we are having a work shower for her. She is my mentor at work and I am close to her but just surprised at the date/time. I would have no problem attending a shower that afternoon but a 6:30 pm shower on a Sat night? Valentine's Night?
I know she and her DH have large close-knit families and I guess her sisters thought it would be nice to have them all there together for Valentine's Day, but I can't imagine many non-family members are going to attend...
Thoughts?

VERY weird date to pick. I'm sure she won't be surprised when nobody shows up though.

Re: Do You Think This is Weird Timing?
I do not think it is a good date. My family threw me a shower and it was supposed to be on July 28th. They wanted to suprise me so they sent me a fake invatation, but really had it on July 6th (4th of july weekend). I was a little disappointed because so many of my friends didn't make it because they already had plans.

Re: Do You Think This is Weird Timing?
I would not do that. I think it's tacky. Valentines Day is once a year and lets be honest she has many days to pick for a shower, or even the afternoon, but i'm sorry but Valentines Day Night is my night w/Joe...

Re: Do You Think This is Weird Timing?
I do think the Valentine's Day part is weird. About the time, we had a couples' baby shower on a Saturday night when I was PG. It was more like a cocktail party. My SIL hosted it and had a martini bar with a bartender and awesome food. It was what we wanted since we had moved OOS earlier that year and it was a great way to get everyone together.

I don't think its strange at all, I would go, not everyone does valentines day seriously. Personally, I don't know anyone who is serious about valentines day, its just a Hallmark holiday...just another day!

Re: Do You Think This is Weird Timing?
we got invited to a retirement party on V-day night. We don't usually make abig deal of v-day...usually just stay home together & order in & watch a movie...but we're prob not going to the party either.
Why would her fam do that? Maybe it was the only date that worked for eveyone in her fam?

Re: Do You Think This is Weird Timing?
I guess it could be the only date that worked...who knows. If it was a couple's thing, I wouldn't mind, because then we'd both be together. I guess it's a popular night though - DH just got an invitation to his Fireman's Exempt Dinner (up in NY so we won't be there) and it's also Valentine's Night. He thought it a stupid date too, but I said, hey, we'd be together, free food and drink - lol!

That is weird...preggo or not, you should be doing the nasty with your SO on this holiday
BTW, who has a baby shower on a Sat night anyway? I was in bed by 7 most nights....

Yes, weird timing. They have to expect that many couples already have plans that night...

who plans a baby shower on a weekend night, and on V-day?
I would not go either - and I am SURE that your co-worker will understand, when she finds out what day it is on.

Personally, I don't know anyone who is serious about valentines day, its just a Hallmark holiday...just another day! a lot of ppl do make plans for that day, even if it falls on a week night. DH and I got engaged that day, so it has an extra meaning for us (and I'm sure lots of other ppl got engaged that day too).
V-day is not a "real" holiday, I agree. but her sister or whoever picked that day shouldn't assume no one takes it seriously. JMO

Re: Do You Think This is Weird Timing?
She knows when it is - she's the one who told us and gave us the invites! Both of them and their families are a religion (7th Day Adventist) that doesn't celebrate Christian holidays, but still...
Also, just because some people may not take Valentine's Day seriously or feed into the whole "Hallmark holiday" thing, doesn't mean I would deliberately make plans that night that didn't include my husband

Re: Do You Think This is Weird Timing?
def bad timing, I don't do the whole v-day thing but I know a lot of people that do nice things on that night. A lot of people do, try getting reservations at a good place that night it's nuts.

Re: Do You Think This is Weird Timing?
first i think its odd to have a shower at night and on a saturday night??
I can kinda understand v-day, maybe they want to do a whole love theme, or something, which a saturday day shower with the theme wouldn't be all that bad, but both together seems a little off.
But I have been involved in planning a few showers, and I've learned it takes an army to get everyone's dates and times to work espically if there is any out of town family members or if its a very large family, so maybe that is the only time that worked for them.
If i didn't have plans I would go.

I'm not concerned really about RSVP-ing no, just wanted to see what others thought...

Re: Do You Think This is Weird Timing?
Is it in a restaurant or a house? I'd be surprised if they could reserve space in a restaurant on Valentine's day.
It was probably the best day they could do it & they probably didn't think twice about the holiday because they don't celebrate it.
I think 7th Day adventists have observe the Sabbath on Saturday, so that may be why it is at night.
