Do you telework or telecommute

please anyone who does this or maybe if you are in HR and manage this...
what are your rules/criteria for telecommuting?
Do you still work traditional hours? 9-5 or something like that...

Do you telework or telecommute

I telecommute 1x a week.

I still work traditional hours. I may take a long lunch to go to an appointment but, I usually end up making up the time later on in the day.

Our main rules are we have to have an office space conducive to telecommuting and children must be under someone else's care (you aren't telecommuting to watch your kids).

Re: Do you telework or telecommute

Telecommute
That's what I was hired to do. They provided me with an IP phone, headset, laptop, extra screen, color printer/scanner, etc.

I was hired for part time. Although I definitely work more hours, but can't complain bc they are really good to me when I take off for vacations or a day here and there in the summer. I'm salary so get paid no matter what.

I go to the office once or twice a year. I work with techs from all over the country who travel so doesn't make sense for me to go to the office unless there's a meeting or the CEO wants to go over some new things or changes.

My last job I commuted and they were a HUGE pain if I asked to work from home.

I am a freelance teleworker. I do not have traditional hours since I am a SAHM, but I have to log a minimum of 15 hours of writing per week and attend 2 conference calls per week. Our hours are logged in through a third party website, and sending my content to my editor is also how they keep tabs on my deadlines. They are flexible and don't care what hours as I work (like morning/evening) as long as I get 15 hours.

Re: Do you telework or telecommute

I allow people who work for me to telecommute in certain situations. If it's snowing, if they are sick but well enough to work, have a sick child at home, I will allow it.

There are no hard and fast "rules" or company rules because it's more of an exception to the rule.

But I expect them to be online at 830 am and online until 530 pm which is their normal working hours.

I expect work to be done and phone calls to be answered as if they were in the office.
I expect to be able to reach them via phone or IM just like the were here.

It's really a privilege that has to be earned IMO- if you are a hard worker, responsible and I know I can trust you, I have no issue with it as all since we can do all the same stuff at home that we can do in the office in our job.

I can telecommute pretty much whenever I want, because my boss knows he can trust me to work just as hard- but most of the time harder- when I am at home.

Re: Do you telework or telecommute

My company allows for work at home (our planners get one day a week as a given, and if they need more they can with approval) and their guidelines are
-must be available from 9am-5pm
-must not be used for personal time/appointments
-if kids are at home, child care provider must be present during those hours
-must have sufficient work (brought home) to have a full day of work.
-Management can cease work from home with out notice.

So this is how I feel and so does the other director and exec leadership. The staff feels they should have flex time basically.

I work in healthcare and this team we are going to trial with is our hospital coding team. Now before anyone says most coders work remote - that is true but we have not had that model ever... we have hospital employed coders and they had always been expected to come in to the office.. now we are trying to give them some flexibility as well as try and recruit new talent.
They are being really weird about it. So we feel its a privilege as well... we are not providing them with equipment either... they are hourly staff... I am just surprised... this team is just so cranky all the damn time...

I worked from home 1 day a week at my prior job, but it was not the norm. I made the arrangement when I came back part time after maternity leave. No one else in my department worked from home, unless for a reason like... a plumber was coming to the house so they had to be home to wait around, etc. I abided by all of the rules of the office - logged on and stayed on throughout normal business hours, was always accessible by phone, email and IM. I did feel like I needed to be even more accountable for my work and "on my game" while working from home to prove that I wasn't slacking off or anything. But that was my own insecurity. Once my DC became mobile though, it was apparent that I couldn't do it anymore. Either work or my DC wasn't getting enough attention.

I work for a VERY flexible company!! I can work from home essentially any time I want. I usually only do it once or twice a month. No rules specifically other than, just get your work done.

It is very helpful when kids are sick or closed for weather, etc

We have the ability to work from home but it's totally dependant on who your mgmt is. My mgmt just switched up 6 months ago. Previous mgr only allowed certain people to work from home during the normal work hrs and the new mgmt team seems pretty open to the work from home as long as work is getting done. There are very few that have a set work from home schedule.

I work from home, and I can make my own schedule. As long as my work is done that is what they care about.

I work from home. Normal business hours 9 to 530 or sometimes later. No rules per se. Just get your stuff done, act professionally, be responsive and act as if you are at the office, and no one really cares where you are. Umfortately, weve found some folks aren't disciplined enough to work from home. If I can hear your kids or dog in the background it's an issue lol. Im not on a formal AWA I just go into the office for meetings once or twice a month and travel about once or twice a month. My team/practice are all located throughout the US so there is no reason for me to physically sit in our NY office (unless meeting a stakeholder, etc.)

At my company, working from home is allowed depending on your position. In my office, I am one of the few who work from home regularly (mostly management) IMO, if it's not the norm in your company and everyone is usually expected in the office, then it's a privilege that needs to be earned. I am provided a company laptop, and can get an extra screen, keyboard, etc. I have my own printer/scanner. Some people (newer and lower level) will call in and say "not feeling so great, so I will work from home" We just fired someone because we tracked that he had not been active in our system after 1130AM that day and did not clock out until 5PM. When I work from home, I log in at 8AM until......I go to sleep. But, this is normal for me as I manage the top producing team in the company- I am basically always working- laptop is always on when I am home. Phone is constantly ringing. I know who I can trust to work from home and I know who I can't.
If your employees are supposed to work 9-5, why wouldn't they do that from home? They are still getting paid the same salary- why would hours change?

we have a very loose policy at work. It is set by the manager and worker.

I know when I work from home my manager is not checking on me and it is usually due a drs appt etc so it is known I will not me sitting at my computer from 9-5.

Working from home has to be a plan that is set prior to the day or a needs to be a set schedule. SO there is no "I'm sick i'll just work from home". If you are sick that is PTO. I have to let mty manager know ahead of time that next tues I would like to work from home.

I also leave early 3 days a week (330) so I can get my ds from daycare. Those days I work from the train and know that if needed I need to be available outside of my office hours.

I WFH once a week, sometimes twice if I have an app or something. I do it to save on child care while my 2 yo is home with me. I'm online from 9-5, sometimes longer, easily accessible and as long as I get my work done, the bosses are fine with it. In fact, on days I WFH, I try to over deliver to prove I am in fact working. But it took years to gain the trust to allowed such a privilege. If I have a client call, I call my dad over to sit with the little one. Can't have him screaming in the background.

DH works from home. He goes into the City maybe once every two weeks. The criteria was that he needed a sepeerate work space that was quiet so he can speak to clients and a high speed internet. He is always on call so he has no set hours but I guess he is normally in his office from 9:00 am to about 7:00 pm.

DH works from home. No set rules, usually starts around 9:15 and shuts down at 5:30. He checks emails all of the time.
