I need to be one of them!

I do.....like I took a brand new patio set from my sister.

And my uncle just gave us a barely used Dryer.

Hecks yea..its saving me MONEY!

I accept a lot of hand-me-downs, especially with kid stuff. I also buy and sell on craigslist fairly often. Anything to save money.

Re: Do you still accept hand-me-downs?

This is something DH & I differ on greatly.

He feels the way the majority of you feel ....

I would prefer to look around our apartment (and eventually our home) and know that everything we have is something we purchased with our hard earned money ... and is our taste, our style.

I have tried to articulate my feelings to him on the subject, but have a lot of trouble making them clear.

Partially for me I think the problem is that we moved into his Grandmother's apartment shortly after she passed away ... and a lot of her things were still here. And still *are* here ... our china cabinet is still 1/2 filled with some of her things, that I will never use. We have her table. Our closets still have some of her things in them ... leaving us less room for our own things.

Maybe I would have felt differently if we got to move into an empty apartment, and were then *offered* some of her things to help us out until we were ready to buy our own updated versions?

The way things happened, I didn't really feel like we had a choice ....

Re: Do you still accept hand-me-downs?

Sure! DH's parents went through a phase where they moved a lot and kept buying furniture. Most of our apartments were full of their stuff from couches to coffee tables, end tables, lamps, etc.

Now we have a mix. Some of the pieces are really beautiful and are my taste so we have them. If it's something I don't think we will use though we will decline.

It takes the pressure off having to furnish our entire house since it's tough for me to make decorating decisions.

Like our night tables right now are from my inlaws, they are temporary but I haven't seen a bedroom set I am in love with and as long as we are functional DH won't pressure me to just get anything.

all the time - my sisters and i trade stuff back and forth about twice a year.

my grandmother tries to give me stuff too, but it usually doesn't fit - my boobs are too big and my arms are too long! Chat Icon
