Do you put up a Christmas tree?

Do you put up a Christmas tree?
Just seeing who puts up a tree, even if they don't follow the "traditional" religious aspects of the holiday.

The majority of Christmas traditions are Pagan, and not at all related to Christianity, so I don't mind putting up a pretty tree with decorations and exchanging gifts with family and friends.

I'm Christian, and put up two trees. I also include many religious ornaments-crosses, angels, etc., even though I'm not very religious.

I am taking dd to see the Christmas pageant at our local church though this year, and I'm hoping to start taking dd to church more now that she's a bit older.

But, we also love Santa and all of the non-religious aspects of the holiday too!

Re: Do you put up a Christmas tree?

Some years yes, some years no. This year is a no: we are moving soon and maybe traveling for Christmas so there's no time or reason for a tree.

I also get into a funk around the holidays and if a tree feels too forced, then I don't bother. One year we went to get a tree and it was like 70 degrees out so instead of getting a tree, we went to the beach. In December. In NY. I will remember that for the rest of my life but not what the tree that year would have looked like, I'm sure.

Re: Do you put up a Christmas tree?

Christian and I put up a tree. I do it because it’s tradition and we always done it even though it has nothing to do with the religious meaning of Christmas.

I remember the excitement of finding presents under the tree and it’s looks so pretty. I love Watching tv at night and having the tree on.

Re: Do you put up a Christmas tree?

I do but I hate it.

It is such a freakin hassle to put up and decorate. I am DREADING do it this year. Dreading.

Then have to take it all down a month later.
And I have a tiny house so it always looks cluttered when the tree is up.
Nothing is nicer than how my living room looks in January the day I take everything down. So clean and open and airy!

I told DH if we didn't have DD I wouldn't be doing it. Maybe I'd get a small table top type tree but that's it.

I read something about how they decorate for the holidays in France and they have a "less is more" mentality. One small thing. One area like a table or mantel just simply decorated and very understated. I love that idea.
I hate when it looks like Christmas threw up all over the house!

Yes I do.
Mini rant ahead. My friend is Jewish and married to a Jewish man. They put up a 12 foot tree every year and try to call it a Hanukkah bush. It bothers me. I would never put up a menorah and call it a Christmas decoration.

Funny, Nothing to me is more depressing then my house when the Christmas decorations come down. it seems so empty and sad.
My house is also decorated like they are filming a hallmark Christmas movie inside so you would hate me lol

I understand what you're saying but the tree isn't linked to the story of Christ is it? The menorah is symbolic of the roots of the holiday I think.

"Christmas" decorations are almost entirely taken from other cultures and other religions.

Christmas Trees were actually outlawed for a while in the Colonies because of their strong ties to Paganism. The lawmakers at the time felt it was diluting and corrupting Christianity.

So, almost everyone in the US is putting up Pagan and Druid symbols and calling it Christmas decorations... (Yule log, Christmas Trees, Santa, late December to celebrate Jesus' birth, etc, etc...)

Every religion and culture takes items from other cultures and religions and makes them their own.

I say "live and let live". As long as they aren't infringing on your beliefs, I wouldn't worry about what they believe. Chat Icon

Correct.
A Christmas tree is not a religious symbol in the least.

I put up a tree - neither my husband or I are religious at all - we do celebrate Christmas but we do so in a more cultural/secular way. I loved seeing the tree with presents under it when I was a child so I wanted to give my kids that same experience. There is something magical about that. Before we had kids we had a mini Charlie Brown tree - I hate taking down the tree so much.

Yes, we put one up and we decorate outside. I love it.
To me, there is nothing better than seeing all the lights on people's houses as I'm driving home from work this time of year.

Re: Do you put up a Christmas tree?

It depends. I might put up a small one this year. But I usually go away for Xmas and I‘m not sure a tree would fit in my used convertible this year. We‘ll see.

Non-religious but Christian and DH is Jewish. He had a tree growing up (they definitely called it a Christmas tree and not a Hanukkah bush) and apparently always told his parents he would never marry a woman who didn't celebrate Christmas. I was the lucky gentile Chat Icon

I like it when it's all done but I definitely dread putting it up. We are a one tree house. The thought of multiple trees and the time it would take decorating them gives me palpitations.

we're both non practicing and never put up a tree but I do put up a christmas decoration on our front door.

I remember one year my mother bought a mini christmas tree and decorated it (we're Jewish). We never called it a Chanukkah bush. my mother loves decorations of any sort!

I agree! I love when it's all over! With the tree and decorations, it's just more clutter. And, I don't have the time or energy to de-clutter too much beforehand. So, we're basically decorating on top of the clutter. It certainly won't make the cover of a magazine!

I do. My house looks like a Christmas village. Chat Icon My kids are sooo into it this year. I miss my mom so much so Christmas is bittersweet but it was her favorite holiday and she loved to decorate so I think about her often especially this time of year and know she would’ve loved how into it my kids are (I think she secretly passed it onto them;)).

I do. I love how it looks & it's fun to put the ornaments on & it puts us in the Christmas spirit even though it's more of a secular symbol of the holiday.

Re: Do you put up a Christmas tree?

I do. We lived in a very small apartment for 2 and half years (we had lived in a larger apartment, but the owner passed away and the relatives sold the house and we were not financially ready to buy our own yet) and we were unable to have a Christmas tree. It made me so sad. We did a little table top one and tried to decorate the walls and what we could but it wasn't the same. This year is DD's second Christmas, but the first time around she was only 8 months old and didn't really get it. This year she's so excited for the lights and she loves to help bake so I can't wait to celebrate with her. We're going to see Santa December 9th so we'll get our tree before and decorate on Sunday. I'm way more excited than she is, I'm sure. Chat Icon
