Do you know how much $$ your SO spends and what they spend it on?
Oprah has on couples who are shocked they are in debt because of their spouses spending habits?
So my question is....would any of you be shocked to find your spouse was leading you into debt?

we both look at what we are spending and look at the accounts also!

Neither one of us controls the other's spending habits, but we don't overextend ourselves so it isn't a problem.
We do discuss major purchases tho -- over $500 I guess.

We do discuss major purchases tho -- over $500 I guess.
Whoooops! I am guilty of not doing this. 
Bah... that was with my DJ money... and my wife knows thats fair game for me.

Well yes i would be shocked to find that out...
Especially since we have joint CCs and bank accounts
He does have his own checking and i don't see him being able to go into debt with it

I know what he spends and he knows what I spend only because I limited myself to my "allowance" - otherwise I tend to spend a lotttt.

We each have our own money. I pay for some bills, DW pays for others. We each save a bit. After that, DW can spend whatever she chooses.

yup, I'd be in shock. But I pay the bills each month, so it couldn't really happen without me knowing (not to mention its so not his style - we don't EVER carry balances on our cards)
we don't watch each others spending that closely though - he buys what he wants as do I.

Yes, I know how much he spends on everything. And most times I don't care, he just tells me. Or, I can see it on the bank account. Not that I care how much he spends. He's responsible. I think we're in the habit of telling each other from when we really needed to watch our spending habits.

We share the same checking and savings, so if he managed to get into serious debt, it would shock me. It would almost be like he lead a double life, b/c he went out of his way to hide it.

Basically but he handles most of the finances and he is way better with money and paying down debt than I will ever be so I don't worry that he would ever let us get in a hole.

Well yes i would be shocked to find that out...
Especially since we have joint CCs and bank accounts

Both our saving and checking acts are joint...and I handle the acts. (just because Im more organized and know how to keep a ledger ) So..I know when anything is being spent...
As far as credit cards...we have a couple but they are put away..and only used for emergencies..so I know he's not getting us into debt there....

I pay all the bills. We call each other on all purchases.....except for what I buy with the cash I carry which may be something small at the dollar store.
Anything else...we do it together, even if it's one cd or DVD

I know what he spends, we have a joint account, but he doesnt know too much what I spend because I handle all the bills...so if I overspent a LOT and we were in debt, he could easily be surprised by it.
