 | Do you know anyone that "works" the system? Dh and I were talking about this recently
I knw someone many, many years ago who managed to qualify for every kind of aid possible for her and her children. She worked off the books b/c she was collecting disability and everything (house, cars, etc) was in her father's name.

 They lived pretty well

Her response is "why not, if they are giving themout" Makes me annoyed, because there are people that really need it and cant get any help. |

He is a 'recovered' drug addict but he's still playing the victim 15 years later & he hasn't had a real job in at least 10 years, yet he smokes cigarettes, get SS disability(I'm still trying to figure out what his disablility is, besides being a jacka$$). He gets people to feel bad for him & help him & no matter what else is going on, he only wants to talk about his problems AND expects everyone to feel sorry for him.Not fun.

 | Re: Do you know anyone that "works" the system? I work in affordable housing and it is disgusting the way some people work the system. It is like a hobby of theirs. I swear, they do all the research and do exactly just what they need to in order to qualify for all different types of aid. Unfortunately, I can't report them, but it makes me sick. For example to get some aid people can only work temp work. So people will work 5 temp jobs so it is full time work, but qualify for assistance b/c they are only temporary help. Or, people who have no joke thousands in "assets" who purposely put it in specific accounts so they can qualify for low income housing, when in reality they make more then most of us. |

 | Re: Do you know anyone that "works" the system? Yes I do...a couple that I know
A: Got their house from a dead next door neighbor woman at a price way below market value - I'm not even sure how they pulled this off, but apparently their family "witnessed" her telling them she would sell them the house at said price before she died.

B: Get the $200/month health insurance program from NYS cuz they have their accountant friend make up phony tax forms

C: Get all kinds of money back in taxes cuz he owns his own business and makes no money

 Need I go on.....

Who knows, She sells the goods on-line to her coutrymen and profits (she's from another country and has citizenship here by marriage). So, she milks US insurance companies for the products, sells them for her own profit and screws the insurance company. It really, really bothers me.

 | Re: Do you know anyone that "works" the system? Yup unfortunately. One of DH's relative is on medicaid and collecting WIC. She got her boss to approve her working off the books to qualify. Granted, she doesn't have health insurance at her job but still. Her and her DH make enough $$$ to pay out of pocket. Now on top of all that she will probaby get a fat tax return next year since it looks like she didn't work this year and has one extra kid.
I'm too chicken to "work" the system. With my luck I would get caught and it's just not in me.

ETA: My friend and her DH also had their accountant put phony expenses. They got a big fat tax return back but 2 years later the IRS audited them and they didn't have any receipts. They had to pay that $$$ back and of course by that time the money was long gone. I don't mess with the IRS.

No idea... other than the person was good friends w/ their manager and somehow got it pushed thru.

Because every employer who pays legal wages to their employees is required to pay State Unemployment Insurance. It's a set percentage for the company and doesnt cost them any more if people get laid off. The employee was probably friends with whoever was in charge there and agreed to do it. It's obviously not legal, not to mention wrong to do.
