Do you have TiVo or DVDR with cable?
Since the giants tickets probably wont work out, I want to get my husband TiVo or the Cablevision version.
Is there much of a difference between the two? Can you record onto a DVD using the cablevision box? Does it rewind live TV like TiVo does?

yes, we have tivo - and you do have to hook it up to a phone line because the tivo makes a phone call to update itself every day, but we got a wireless phone jack thing so there are fewer wires to worry about. I have not recorded anything yet sorry I cannot be more help.

we have DVR from Time Warner... yes you can pause, rewind live tv... you can record 2 shows at the same time or record 1 and watch another 1....

So why do people get tivo then? I just called cable too and they said the box is free, I just have to trade in the old one for a new box and pay 9.95 a month whereas TIVO was 12.95 a month and the box was like 50 bucks with a 150.00 rebate. (the only downside is giving cable more of my money! lol)

We have TIVO. They have various models of recorders so you can get as much recording time as you need. There is one that has a DVD recording feature. The main reason we went with TIVO was that you can get a lifetime subscription for the unit for $299 so if you move, you can take your service with you. Plus the break even point was less then 2 years. With Cable or the monthly subsription you just pay and pay.

Tivo was out first so some people had already bought it. My friend just bought Tivo for her parents and as much as my DH tried to tell her to just get the DVR she did it anyway. She can't admit when hes right and shes wrong.

Silly question on DVR (I'm glad this was posted, I was going to post myself)...
I was told that at one point there was an issue where you couldn't watch something & have DVR record another channel. Do you know if this is still the case?
I'm assuming they've resolved this issue since it's a basic need of their customers but with Cablevision you never know.

We have both. I like the DVR bc we can record 2 things at the same time. But there's also a way to get around that with the Tivo. All you have to do is splice the coaxial cable, have one going into the Tivo box and the other going directly into the TV or VCR. When you do it that way all you do is put the Tivo on Standby to watch another program.

Tivo can connect via phone or through the internet, our connects via a wireless modem.
There are features Tivo has that cable DVR does not like wishlists and season passes.
Through Tivo we can access all of our digital photos, and music we have on our PC and watch/listen through our TV/surround sound. We can also put shows on our ipods through Tivo's connection to our PC.
Tivo is also working out deals with other
new services all the time.
Either way it will mostly work the same but I favor Tivo. I consider the DVR to be one of the greatest inventions of convenience in my lifetime.

I just got the Cablevision DVR last Thursday and it ROCKS. I love it so much. Have all my shows all set to be taped now. Plus love how you can pause live TV and also have picture in picture and watch 2 shows at once. Definitely get the Cablevision one and you only need one box. With Tivo it is a separate box.

I have had the Cablevision DVR since the spring (maybe earlier). I love it. We got it when it was relatively new and chose it over TIVO. the main reason for us doing so was at that time TIVO did not record in hiDef. The DVR from Cablevision has a HIDef DVR box option. Once you have a DVR, you wonder how you ever lived without one. As for the other question above, there is no problem watching one show and recording another. You can watch one, record one, or record two - if you record two at a time you are locked into watching one of the two. You can rewind, pause, etc. real time as well. I have never had an issue with it missing a show I had programmed even when time and days change (if you have it set up right). I recently had issues with the shows I recorded skipping however and had to have my box replaced. But I did adapt it early on so I may have had a bad box for the simple reason of it being new.

so you have a dvr box and can't watch another show and record another one at the same time? prehaps somthing is wrong with your box...
you can record say channel 5 while watching channel 2. you can record both 5 and 2 but then you can't change the channel (in theory as i never tired taping 2 things at once) DVR automatically starts to save anything that you watch, you just phyically need to hit record for it to be stored.
DVR also gives you picture in picture if your tv already doesn't have it.
your other question is to output it to dvd, you would need a dvd recorder for that.

Here is another question... if I have a DVD in my DVD player and I am playing it on the TV can I DVR the DVD. I would manual record channel 3...do you think that would work so I could store a DVD on the DVR?

I actually have both Tivo and the Cablevision version.
Here is how we about each
TIVO:
PROS:
More user friendly
You can choose an actor you like and tell it to tape anythign with them in it, you can choose a movie from a menu that and ask it to tape, even if its not yet scheduled to be on, it will look for it
CONS: need to hook up to ethernet or phone line (we do ethernet because it never interferes with the phone and its faster to download)
Does not have a tuner built in
You can only tape what you are watchin - or you have to switch between inputs and wont get all the channels
Gets confused sometimes when you are flipping channels. The tivo basically types in each channel number so if you go too fast it wont be able to read the proper channel!
DVR:
Pros:
Can tape 2 things at the same time
Built in tuner
Less money, free Box
Dont need add't wiring, can just hook up to your usual cable wire
Offer a HD version (no HD version available iwth TIVO)
CONS:
Can only choose what to tape off the tv Guide menu, cannot type in what you want for a future date.
Overall just not as user friendly.
IMO, if you have never had TiVO you wont notice the things that I dont like about the DVR. If I were in your position I would just get the DVR, its easier and less $$.

What I meant (unless I am wrong and just havent figured out that function yet), is you cannot look up a show that isnt on for say the next 6 weeks and tell the DVR to record that.
For example, I can type in Lost on TIVO and tell it to tape the next episode whatever channel, whatever time, even if the next episode isnt set to air for a year it will keep that in its memory until I delete it.
With the DVR, you must select a time slot or select from the tv guide function what you want to tape. So if you do not know when a show is set to air, you will not be able to just type in the title and let the DVR do the rest, you will have to find when it is on in order to set it to record.
Again, it may be that I am wrong and dont know that functionality yet. I have had TIVO for 2 years, we only got the DVR a few months ago and really dont use it as much as most.

have DVR and I dont think you can program specifically 6 weeks away, but you can choose to record the entire season of a show.
