Do you eat meat on Christmas Eve?
Just curious. I came from a small family of 4, so there's no way my mom would do all the fish dishes. We sometimes did homemade pizzas.
I still have a small family, so I typically do something Italian, especially since my 3 1/2 yo doesn't like trying fish.
Well, after almost 7 years, just heard that my ILs don't eat meat on Christmas Eve. (funny, I made penne ala vodka, chicken, meatballs 2 years ago when they were over???
So curious of others traditions.

I never ate meat on Christmas Eve, because it is a day of abstinence (not sex-y abstinence, just means not eating meat, like on Fridays). I was raised a Traditional Catholic though, so we did things differently than most Catholics do them.

We eat whatever we can on Christmas Eve. We're a household of procrastinators.

Re: Do you eat meat on Christmas Eve?
we eat fish.... but because we love it We only started doing the big xmas eve fish thing like 15 years ago... now that I am married DH really likes it so I think its a tradition we will stick to ( and make a non fish pasta dish for those non-fish eaters) when needed!

Re: Do you eat meat on Christmas Eve?
Nope. Growing up my grandmother always did the 7 fish and we had a huge christmas eve. Now, it's just DH and I with my mother, her boyfriend and my sister. So my mom makes penne ala vodka (no prosciutto), stuffed artichokes, shrimp cocktail and a bunch of side dishes. But still, not meat.

Re: Do you eat meat on Christmas Eve?
I never did growing up, but my inlaws do a meat sauce along with their fishes, so now we do. They also do a big antipasto, with meats and cheeses and other italian specialties.

Re: Do you eat meat on Christmas Eve?
No, we do the whole 7 fishes tradition and homeade pasta. My nana wouldn't have it any other way and although I don't eat much of the seafood, I love this tradition. We also have a side of homeade pasta with marinara sauce for those of us who don't eat the fish.

Re: Do you eat meat on Christmas Eve?
this is an interesting topic
growing up my mom cooked for cmas eve and cmas day. the eve had fish (not all 7, but a few). the day had meat (turkey or something else).
well since my sis started a family and i started dating DH, we split the holidays. so we do cmas eve.
since my mom is only preparing for ONE holiday now, she prepared whatever she wants. most of the time it involves MEAT.
so on the day when i celebrate with DH's fam and they ask us about eve and DH mentions the menu, i think they kinda raise their eyebrows.
DH's fam still cooks both days (big fam), so for them to do meat on the eve would be unheard of. plus, they LOVE fish!

My MIL makes a bunch of seafood dishes, but I don't eat seafood so she usually makes chicken cutlets for me.

Re: Do you eat meat on Christmas Eve?
We have a party at our home every Christmas Eve and yes.. we have meat. I grew up as a Catholic and wanted to be a nun - but by the time I started following the vocation on my own the fasting was eliminated by the church.. THANK GOODNESS!

Really? I never heard of this and I grew up in a pretty strict Catholic family. Even my aunt the nun eats meat on Xmas eve.
Now I'm going to look into it

It is old school. They officially got rid of the fasting way back in the early 80's - but they kind of stopped it unofficially after Vatican II.

Christmas Eve has not been a day of abstinence since the Vatican changed the rule in the early 80's.
My family is Cuban, and we usually have rice, beans and pork.

Re: Do you eat meat on Christmas Eve?
We celebrate Christmas Eve with a big meal and have family over. We definiely eat meat, I don't think we have ever eaten fish during this season. I had never heard of it.
Christmas day we do nothing and eat leftovers. Its tradition in my family. Now that I'm married, I'm bringing this tradition with me.
ETA: I am also Catholic, born in NY with family from Dominican Republic.

Nope, no meat at all we don't do ALL the fish dishes though but we do have fish and no meat
I always remember how hard it was b/c my mom would make some of the meat dishes on Christmas Eve for Christmas Day (like a version of braciole) and it was so hard not to eat it!!!

I was raised Traditional Catholic. They don't follow any of the Vatican II changes. They have the Latin Mass, full habited nuns, women have to have their heads covered in church, etc. They are pretty strict with the days of fast and abstinence. I was raised never eating meat on any Friday, not just Lent.
