Do you do anything charitable for the Holidays?

I keep thinking about people who have very little...every year passes and I want to do "something" for others less fortunate.

I usually donate a toy or two to Toys for Tots. But i feel it isn't enough...maybe its since i've become a mom...but i see the toys and clothes my son has, and it makes me really sad to know there are kids out there who get nothing or very little...

Trying to get some inspirational ideas on ways to help. I want to get my mothers group involved in something as well...

Any ideas?

We've donated before to Brighter Tomorrow's - it's a women's shelter for abused women. These women leave home with their kids and literally nothing else to escape abuse.

We've also donated to a hospice (the one in Northport).

I bought some groceries for a food drive in time for thanksgiving. They were setup outside a Stop and Shop and they had a list of foods they needed.

I'm in charge of the "adopt a family" at work....I've been collecting desparately-needed clothes for this little boy in my town who has absolutely nothing...

My church is doing something called Operation Christmas Child

You fill a showbox with scholl supplies, toys, hygiene items or hard candy. You can add a note. Then you drop it off at one of the centers with a check for $7 for each box you have. It will be delivered to a child that wouldnt get anything for Christmas.

We donate coupons for free turkeys to our church. Along with it we give canned food and a bag of potatos.
We give several toys to Toys For Tots. We aslo give toys to John Theissen Children's Foundation
We did 2 letters from NY Cares this year.
Plus we always drop a little in the Salavation Army Santa pots

I am going to research heavily today and look into these and see what we can do. I have about 50 members in our moms group...I would love to do something wonderful like the ideas mentioned.

YOu sign up and get letters from kids in shelters. We always do 1 younger child and 1 teenager. They fill out a card or write a letter to Santa with what they want. You buy the items (spending 40-50) and then wrap and send them to the shelter. They give them out to the kids on Xmas morning!

There are several organizations I contribute to at this time of year. Salvation Army posts "Angels" at our job; children who need toys and clothes.

There is also another organization through my church that collects donations of toys/clothes/electronics for needy children/teens at this time of year.

I also give to Little Shelter, HSUS, etc.

I do make a point to donate to needy children.

Last year in Roosevelt Field mall the Salvation Army (I believe) had a tree with cards with kids names and ages and needs/wants.

I picked up 4 cards and bought each kid the most expensive toy they asked for. 2 boys and 2 girls

Also my DH's job sponsors kids for xmas who need/want certain items. We make it a point to sponsor more than one child and buy all the needs and wants listed that we feel appropriate.

I plan to do the same this year. I also donated to animal charities as a yearly gift.

We usually make our biggest cash donation at the end of the year. It works out well for us because when the year is over we are able to see exactly how much we have saved and how much of that we can afford to give.

We donate money to feed people for Thanksgiving. I have always had a hard time understanding why people go hungry in the wealthiest nation in the world and I have a soft spot for charities that help feed the poor.

I also try to donate toys at Christmas time to the fire department or somewhere else that has a toy drive.

Yes, I love doing this!

I buy gifts for kids for a charity thru my company.

I always buy the gifts first and then it puts my in a good spirit for Christmas.

I do it at my church, you pick a star that has a child's gender and age and buy them a few gifts. And, I usually buy some things for our clients children at work. We have a ton of people call wanting to adopt a family but there's always that one gift that doesn't show up, so I usually buy it.
