do you agree with this statement??

" if you're having a party at your house, its open invitation, unless you say otherwise." ??
i just had an argument about this with a friend. we are both going to another friends apartment for NYE party tonight. my friend said that he invited someone to come with him. i just kind of said " oh, did you tell (the host)?" and he goes " no! i don't need to- he never said the party was closed- if you have a party, its open invitation unless you say its not. so i can show up with whoever i want." Chat Icon Chat Icon
now-- maybe its because this person still lives at home and doesn't understand what its like having your own place.. but to me, i kinda like to know ahead of time who is coming, and how many people... its not like i would turn anybody away, but to me its just common courtesy to let the host know if you're bringing somebody.... its not a bar, its where i live!
what do you guys think?? is it just me, or is this guy kinda rude??

I say a party is CLOSED invitation unless otherwise stated.

How rude to assume you can invite someone else without letting the host or hostess know. Uh... unless it's a frat party... Chat Icon

I think it's more that he's just immature. This mentality is very "college" / "frat party" to me.

he is wrongo bigtime. That is poor manners. You must let the host/hostess know ahead. He should stay home.

I agree with this completely. I'd never bring an extra w/o checking with the host first.

Re: do you agree with this statement??

Unless the host of the party says "Feel free to invite XXXX", I would say its a closed party.
I would expect someone to let me know if they were bringing others.

Even a SO should be run past the host first. If they have food for the 20 people they invite, and 40+ show up, there are going to be some very unhappy people!

I agree!! If I was the hostess I would probably say yes unless it was a sit down dinner party or something, but you have to ask...that's just being considerate.

i'm going to get "all ethnic" now...lol

in the hispanic community, IT'S ALWAYS OPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i don't care for it, but that's the way it is. doesn't matter which country you're from, but if you're hispanic/latino it's an unwritten rule that your guests will bring guests of their own.

this is why i don't host many events.

Absolutely not. You don't bring random people to someone's home uninvited.

Re: do you agree with this statement??

I agree that it's rude. I've decided not to host events sometimes because of certain people that I don't care for coming, I'd be super POed if someone showed up uninvited. I know that sounds petty, but I am just being honest ;).

I'm Latina too. My family has done this to my parents - showing up with extra people on some occasions- and it pisses me off Chat Icon I have actually had to set some of my hillbilly cousins straight on this issue - especially when it came time to my wedding.

Some people think I'm bitchy, but I have no problem being rude to guests who bring crashers.
