DO all nursing home $uck this bad....
I can't take this place much longer and neither can my mother and my poor Grandma It is horendous!!!!! The place was a mess today and then they come running in when they see us coming to see my Grandma! I don't even want to get into what was going on there today...too much to list.
My mother is a nurse and had made it known that she is a nurse so they come running when they see her because they knew that they are NOT doing their jobs!!! I just can't imagine what would happen if she didn't have daily visitors.
Are all nursing homes like this??Please tell me NO

Re: DO all nursing home $uck this bad....
What nursing home is she at? My grandmother was in Benenson Nursing Home/Rehab Facility in flushign for 8 months before she passed away and they were AMAZING! They treated her great and the nurses and staff were great to. Benenson is also linked to two other bursing homes in the area...Flushing Manor Care Center and Flushing Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation - my mom and i went to look at Flushing Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation and it was sooo sad and scary! Benenson is the much nicer facility......imo

I'm soooo sorry Kathleen, and I feel your pain. You absolutely have to stay on top of them, I feel bad harassing the nurses and aides but our loved ones need the proper care.

I am so sorry you are dealing with a bad nursing home.
My Grandpa was in a nursing home in Southampton about 15 or so years ago and it was HORRIBLE

Re: DO all nursing home $uck this bad....
I'd have your mom speak VERY LOUDLY that she is a nurse and she knows hte appropriate people to contact if her mother isn't getting the right care.
I work in med mal law and when my grandmother was very ill she got a bedsore and I literlly FLIPPED out on them in the hospital...my mom and uncle were like
How long does she need to be in there? Can she "graduate" to an assisted living? I have a fair amount of experience with this If you need some help or just a shoulder

Years ago, we had my grandmother moved from one nursing home to another and we were much happier. She went from Carillon to the one that is on Route 110 and the Expressway. I forget the name of it.

I am certified in geriatrics. Did you look at the book that lists all the infractions at the home. This book should be at the front and you can look at it. I would go with my gut feelings and report them and also get her out of that home and switch her to another one . HTH

Re: DO all nursing home $uck this bad....
One of the things that I found when my Grandma was in the nursing home was...they'll NEVER take care of your loved ones the way you would.
My Grammie lived w/us about a year before having to go in for rehab & finally long term. Down to bathing, clothing, interaction you name it. My Grammie was an independent woman until her final months of life on earth. I actually saw HER several times helping other patients...
I could go into detail, but it's too upsetting. But...the one thing I will say is that medically when something happens they're right there - giving the support that I know I couldn't give at home - around the clock.
It truly ***** 110% seeing someone you're very close to have to be in a situation like that. Stay strong...keep up your prayers...and visit as often as you can - it's VERY important that they see family often...

This website offers a lot of information, whether pertaining to your grandmother's rights as a patient, who to contact should an issue arise and facility ratings/comparisons.

I have also worked in a nursing home, and although the staff were very caring, the staffing in almost all nursing homes s*ck. In Florida the law mandates a certain number of aides to patients and the patients get better care, in NY it seems that there is one nurse for 30+ patients and maybe 3 aides for the same amount. Im sure not all nursing homes are the same, but the ones in LI and Queens take much better care than the ones I get patients from now in Brooklyn. We have reported them many times, but nothing seems to happen. So sad

Re: DO all nursing home $uck this bad....
the only reason my grandmother got great care at Jamaica was bc my family all took turns and she had someone there ALL DAY from 7AM to 10PM - they took EXCELLENT care of her AND my parents even had to point out when OTHER patients were being neglected. . . they said the patients who had no visitors were often neglected

I think this is true unfortunatly..Those who have family around all the time get better care than those who don't. Maybe not all the time, but a lot of the time it is

and if certain visitors came at specific times - they would make sure that they were in the room doing stuff at that time. . .
a woman my grandmother roomed with had a daughter that could only come after work so they would ignore her all day until 5PM and then make a mad dash to clean her up and be around.

I agree.
MY grandmother was in a WONDEFUL nursing home. It's in the Bronx but probably still worth looking into because they are so great. It's called St. Patrick's.
