Re: Disney- Florida or California
I've only gone to FL with the boys but I have been to CA several times before kids. I can't speak for the theme parks but I love Southern California. Actually I love Northern California even more.
However, the real appeal of FL to us is the short plane ride. We are also still in the same time zone so it is convenient. We went to AZ last year with the boys and their sleep schedule never adjusted. We would be up at 4-5am everyday and nothing was open!

true, didn't think of the sleep schedule. I've always wanted to go to California and thought taking them to disney would be a nice treat.

Re: Disney- Florida or California
Well I think it depends on what you want out of the trip. Wdw is more THE destination as tgere are 4 parks 2 water parks, dtd and mini golf places, spas etc. You could easily spend a week and not see everything. Disneyland is nice. Has some classics no longer at wdw (mr toads wild ride etc). But it is basically 2parks and some nice resorts. To me it was more a part of a California vacation than the actual vacation spot. It is easy to work disneyland into other attractions for a longer trip.
While you can certainly do things outside wdw like universal wdw offers enough to keep you busy.
Somethings to consider....
3 hour time difference can be rough for short trips with young kids taking a longer trip would help. Flights are much longer to CA than FL. If you go to CA could you work in some other things. When we went we used DL to break up a flight to hawaii. Another trip was a 2 week trip starting in San Fran driving down the coast and ending in san diego.

Just to echo PP, you can do Disneyland in a day as part of a trip to CA, whereas you would spend the whole week at Disney in Orlando. Depends on what you want. Strictly Disney- def go to FL.

Re: Disney- Florida or California
I've been to Cali and looooove it there but I've never been to Disneyland. From what others have told me it's nowhere near as good as the original in Florida. To me, Florida is the only "real" Disneyworld. I could see doing a day in Disneyland if you're going to be in California for a while but I wouldn't go there for the purpose of going to Disney.

Actually I think the CA one is the original no? Either way I have never been to the CA one but have heard what others stated- that it's much smaller and more of a day trip thing.

this.. altho they do have some unique things special to Disneyland its just not worth it to me.
I now sit dead center between both.. still choose WDW
ETA: yes, DisneyLAND is the original. Opened in 1955. DisneyWORLD opened in 1971

Re: Disney- Florida or California
I do love them both, but I won't take DS to Cali until he's older, like 10, and then it would just be part of a larger trip to other places in Cali.
FL definitely has lots more to do and the water parks are a nice perk if you are going at a warm time of year.

Re: Disney- Florida or California
Walt made Disneyland in CA first, but found out very quickly that everyone grabbed all of the property immediately around his park, so he couldn't expand. For his 2nd go-around, he created dozens of fake companies, all of which bought different parcels of swampland. Nobody figured out that all of these fake companies was really Disney until he announced his new plans. Now, DisneyWorld has lots of room to expand and have lots more attractions, plus a large buffer.

Disney- Florida or California
Neither... each is great in its own way, and you can't really compare them.
Disneyland is the original - all Walt, where he actually walked!! It is smaller, but it isj suit the right size for where it is. It was attractions that Walt thought up (with help I know) and are still very close to what he imagined. You don't have to rely on busses or your car to get around. Disneyland actually has more rides than the Magic Kingdom!
Disney world is great because it has a lot more in whole, though I think Disneyland has more quality. I do like how it is totally away from the real world.
DL is a 3 day minimum, WDW is a 5 day minimum, IMO.
DEFINITELY go to Disneyland - just adjust your expectations. It is a wonderful park and California Adventure (whatever it is called now) is really good too, haven't been since it was all redone, though!
