Disappointed in Target

I went to Target and wanted to buy some hannukkah decorations since its pretty early in Dec, I wanted to put some up.

Aisles an aisles of christmas stuff, but not ONE thing for hannukkah, not even candles. Thats very disappointing.

Re: Disappointed in Target

Bed Bath and Beyond has the bext selection for Chanukah - trust me - I make it my business to seek out retailers who make an effort.

Considering that the NY metropolitan area has the highest population of Jews in the country (and at times more than Israel), you would think that retailers would make more of an effort. I understand a Target in Missouri or Nebraska not having more than a card or two or a box of candles, but in NY the expectations are different.

If I really want very decorative things for Chanukah, I have to go to specialized judaica shops that charge an arm and a leg for anything. The stuff that you see in big stores is the same stuff year after year.

Honestly, when you get down to it, Chanukah is not a HOLY holiday. It is a festival. It is not based in the Old Testament. Since it falls around the time of Christmas, many people think it is one of our big days - it isnt. The similarities only lie in gift giving. That being said, Chanukah is commercialized (and unnecessarily at that) they way Christmas is.

I am actually more offended when I see a gingerbread Chanukah house like I saw at Waldbaums.

.

the target buying office is in Minnesota and the Bed Bath buying office in right here on LI
and target doesn't do regional assortments- while alot of stores do- they are going to start- but as of now they don't

I am sure that has alot to do with the differences in selection

based on my experince when I left the NY area for Colorado and people where surprised when I said I know jewish people

That's good to know! I need to get a Menorah for my office & I didn't see any at Sears with the Christmas stuff ( it was early though).

I didn't want to get a fancy one from a specialty website, b/c I'm not to supposed to spend too much & it's for an office so it should be pretty generic.

Macy's and Fortunoff also have a very nice selection of Hanukka merchandise. I got a really cute set of dreidel lights at Macy's many yrs ago.

Maybe... I didn't look in the candle and stationary section though, I looked in the seasonal area. What, are they trying to hide it?

I will check out BB&B.

I just came back from Dollar Tree, I needed to get some shirt boxes. they had the most pathetic Hanukkah "display" I have ever seen. it had a few boxes of Hanukkah candles and the rest of the merchandise was light blue paper plates and light blue scented candles Chat Icon

Why don't you write them a letter- let them know there is a demand. Maybe you'll get a coupon!Chat Icon

Re: Disappointed in Target

Beth is right. Retailers that are based in NY would be more in tune with the needs of a NY clientele. Those who are not based in NY or other areas with large Jewish populations would have to do some serious market research to realize the demand for such items. Truthfully, some do not care all that much and that may be because it doesn't bring them that much money in the grand scheme of things.

Re: Disappointed in Target

Lauren - we went to Kohl's today and they had an aisle in the back devoted to what you're looking for, including menoras (sp?) and table decorations.

Walmart did too when we were there.
