Difficulty breathing in first trimester?
I'm 8 wks 5 days, and I have been having the hardest time catching my breath for the past week and a half or so, but I feel like it's getting worse. My doctor did say she was going to refer me to a pulmonologist, but she forgot to give me her suggestion (I'm going to call in the am)
Has anyone experienced this? What can I do to help it? From what I've read it seems to be common and it doesn't seem to hurt the baby, but is there anything I can do to breath better?

Re: Difficulty breathing in first trimester?
I don't know how severe your issue is, but I frequently feel winded during pregnancy starting in my 1st trimester for both pregnancies. When I lay on my side and rest it gets better. Before getting pregnant, I was told by my Dr that I had "a touch of asthma" and she gave me an inhaler that I used maybe 3 times ever and not while pregnant (even though I was told I could if I needed to).

Re: Difficulty breathing in first trimester?
yes. i failed a breathing test at my reg dr so i saw my pulmonologist who basically said it was normal due to the hormones, the placement of baby. I only use my inhaler if i get very bad . I had pneumonia last year and afterwards had asthma. Def go see the specialist though just to rule out anything else!!

Difficulty breathing in first trimester?
I had shortness of breath during the first trimester. My doctor was not concerned. It went away completely around 15 weeks.

I've had that too since about 7-8 weeks.. I would walk up a flight of stairs and need to catch my breath before I could go back down. I thought it would only get worse, but right now I'm 16 weeks and it's starting to get better.

Difficulty breathing in first trimester?
Thanks everyone! It doesn't seem to be related to any activity-I'll be sitting or standing and literally start gasping for breath. I'm hoping to get into a pulmonologist today, since there is a history of asthma in my family and it's only gotten worse over the past week. DH actually wanted to take me to the hospital or an emergency clinic last night I was struggling so much.
I'll keep you all updated!

Re: Difficulty breathing in first trimester?
That's very common in pregnancy, even early on. I'm surprised your OB didn't tell you that.

Re: Difficulty breathing in first trimester?
I'm 9w and for the past 2-3 weeks I've definitely had shortness of breath. Nothing severe, just constantly feeling like I need to take deep breaths and sometimes getting winded. Happened during my first pregnancy too!

Difficulty breathing in first trimester?
I have an appointment with a pulmonologist today at 5 so we shall see. I think the reason my gyno was originally concerned was because of my own/family history of asthma. And I'm only getting concerned now because it's been getting worse, and I'm literally gasping for breath no matter what I do.

Difficulty breathing in first trimester?
That happened to me too - but I was never gasping. I think its a good idea to follow up, good luck!
