Re: difference between a gel and shellac manicure
It is said the shellac is much easier on your nails than the gel I got shellac and it caused no damage and I took it off myself at home with no real soaking or scraping.

Shellac is a brand name. There are many. A gel manicure is a gel manicure. The gel in regular looking nail polish bottles is usually easier to remove than the gel in small pots. Go for anything in a regular looking bottle and you be better off.

ITA with both of these posts.
They both have a wear time of about 2 weeks. Gel is thicker, much harder to get off, and causes more damage to nails. Usually comes in a little pot. Shellack (or Gelish, Gelack - there are a bunch of different bands) is thinner and much easier to remove with less damage to nails. They come in a normal nail polish bottle.
like the PP said, go for the ones in the regular nail polish looking bottle! It's just as good and MUCH easier to deal with.

Re: difference between a gel and shellac manicure
Does it really stay on for 2 weeks? I got both Opi and Shellac and they peeled after about a week. Is it the place I got it done or is it me?

It is the technician. How they prep plays a huge role. I was going to a place and the girl I would usually go to did a great job. It would last up 3 weeks. I didn't make an appointment one time and used another girl, 4 DAYS it lasted! I was so pissed because I spent $35 to get it done and the worst part was I didn't have any time to go back and complain. Actually after that time I haven't gone back and I just started doing manicures at home.
