I like red velvet but hate all the dye. I usually will opt for a chocolate cake instead, same flavor for the most part.

I started self-learning ASL during quarantine. I'm not fluent, but I think at this point, I would be able to get my point across, and understand the basics if I met a person who is deaf. I'm probably at about a pre-school/Kindergarten level. I plan on continuing to learn.

I took 4 levels of ASL in college. Our professor was deaf and he’d give u hell if he caught u speaking. U were not supposed to speak at all, and he was surprisingly very good at catching someone speaking. U learn so much about the language itself and culture, it’s all about focusing on the face and not in the hands (u can see the hands with ur peripheral vision, not easy at the beginning!), and facial expressions are so important. By the end I was pretty fluent but once I finished college, I stopped practicing it and now I remember very little. The deaf community is amazing, so welcoming to new people, and so supportive of one another. They actually don’t think of themselves as disabled because they can’t hear and/or speak. They’re very goal driven and proud of the achievements they reach. I’d suggest friending someone who’s fluent in ASL so u can practice as much possible and learn much faster.

Trying to learn to bake a decent cake from scratch.

Christina Tosi's Milkbar Birthday cake - TO FOR FOR!! I took her online baking course in January, her recipes are amazing. I believe you can find the recipe on the Milkbar website. If not, I can send it to you if you're interested.

Homemade Red Velvet is the.best but messy too. Made a few years ago with one of the kids and it was a hit.

I like red velvet but hate all the dye. I usually will opt for a chocolate cake instead, same flavor for the most part.

WORST part. Had red all over the place for days lol

LOL In the future, try the gel colors. They are easier to deal with and a little less messy. Plus, it requires less dye to achieve a vibrant color.

That’s exactly why I haven’t made it in such a long time and it’s such a shame cause that’s my favorite cake. I just don’t like the artificial food coloring anymore. I’ve used natural food coloring for rainbow cookies and even though the colors are not so vibrant once baked, they’re not too bad. I wonder how they’d work with a red velvet cake!

That's very cool. I'm watching a lot of YouTube videos, so I'm trying to learn about the culture, grammar, facial expressions, etc. It's definitely not just a word for word replacement. Also, by watching different videos, I'm seeing how different people do some of the signs.

I don't know anyone who speaks ASL yet.
I'm helping to create a Special Needs group in our local Scouting area, so I'm assuming that at some point, there will be a Scout who is deaf, and I could help communicate with them.

I’ve always wondered - what exactly is red velvet cake? Chat Icon it tastes like chocolate to me - is there some other flavor or something I’m missing (other than the color of course)?

It's basically a richer chocolate cake due to the buttermilk and vinegar. Chat Icon The reaction between the cocoa powder, vinegar and buttermilk is what gives it the red hue, traditionally it doesn't contain dye.

Oh interesting, I didn’t know about those ingredients. I pretty much thought it was red chocolate cake lol.

My husband bought me a cricut as a gift. I started crafting and have been making household items; welcome signs, door signs, home decor. I recently bought a new house and made so many things!

Spanish on Duolingo. Always wanted to learn it.

I could be more consistent but I'm getting there.

I was never a huge fan of red velvet. I feel like I should like it more than I do based on what's in it, although I would put chocolate icing on it, not white. Yuck.

It looks a little more daunting than it really is. You can also do it in stages and assemble the cake at any point. You can make the crumb ahead of time as well as the cakes, wrap the layers tightly and freeze until you need them. The cake by itself is SO good so even if you didn't want to do the crumb and frosting, it's still amazing plain or with a little powdered sugar.

Good luck! Looking forward to hearing how you make out with it. Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA - If you want a really easy, from scratch cake recipe check out the Dark Chocolate Bundt on my blog. It's REALLY easy, everything is done in one bowl and it is always super moist and rich. It's always a big hit. You can make it into a layer cake, bundt, loaf or cupcakes. Just adjust the baking time. DARK CHOCOLATE BUNDT CAKE FROM SCRATCH

Summer camps are allowed to operate this year, so I'm doing two different camps to make up for missing last year's summer camp. Chat Icon
We still can't do weekend camping with just our Troop. Only the big summer camps.

To avoid the food coloring, try a richer colored cocoa powder. It won't be that bright red, more of a deep red, but that's technically how it should be anyway. King Arthur Baking Company has great ingredients online for purchase, they have a really nice burgundy cocoa powder that would work great if you want to try it without the dye. Chat Icon

You can’t use Dutch process cocoa powder, though. It doesn’t work. I tried it. If you used Dutch process, let me know how you did that. Everywhere I read said it was next to impossible even with red dye. I don’t have access to Natural Cocoa Powder.

Yes, you're right. Red Velvet should be made without Dutch processed cocoa, I use naturally unsweetened. Can you order any online?

Cooking!

My DH is not much of a chef, and I only ever did really simple, basic dishes with a lot of pre-made ingredients.

I've been cooking a lot from scratch and loving it. I've made a few really quality meals.

My favorite so far was pan seared chicken breast with a balsamic cream sauce topped with carmelized onions and a side of sauteed spinach.

DH loved the baked chicken milanese and garlic butter brussel sprouts. Chat Icon

ETA: I've also started exercising more- at home you tube videos and then walking/jogging. I lost 20 lbs! I fell off the wagon around the holidays but I'm getting back into it.

ETAA: I made homemade vanilla, too! Mostly because vanilla got SO expensive. lol!
