We redid our bath ourselves, down to the studs. It was a lot of work but was so worth it. What we spent (3000) we will get back at least 4xs that when we sell.

A PIA but worth it!

yeah, my parents did the same thing. spent the same amount too. what they would have spent (the quotes they got) started at $12,000.00. I don't have a lot of money, so that's why i wouldn't pay anyone. plus, i am too cheap to pay someone if it's something that i can do...

LOL! I wish DH was more handy. He isn't afraid to take anything on, but damn is he sllllooowwww. he thinks and re-thinks, stops to go talk to the neighbors, calls his uncle, calls his father. then.... he'll finally start.

I love him dearly!

I had my brother (a contractor) do my bathroom. We spent $3,000 in supplies and easily added $10,000 in value.

We watched him like a hawk so we could learn how to do future projects on our own since he lives out of state.

IMO, it's so worth it if you can do it on your own. We would have had to spend $15,000 to pay someone to do our bathroom (down to the cement- he redid the studs and all) and there's no way this market would have allowed us to see a full return on that cost.

Yes. My DH gutted our entire house when we bought it which included a kitchen and bathroom as well. He has a lot of patience and is a very determined person so it worked for us. Took us some time but we got it done.

Is this something you will be doing yourself or would you have anyone helping you? Friend? Family?

We redid the kitchen ourselves and saved a ton of cash. The only thing we didn't do ourselves in the kitchen was the countertops but that wasn't a big deal since installationw as included.

The bathroom I had a contractor do.

Re: Did you re-do your kitchen / baths yourself?

We are re-doing our Kitchen ourselfs.
We moved our kitchen from the front of the house to the back of the house.
all new Wiring, Pumbling and Appliances.

My Dh is quite handy...It has saved us so much money. BUT (always a but)
Its also taken us many months to even get to the having the Cabinets installed we are now waiting on picking a granite.

Good luck

oh and once we finish the kitchen we will move on to the bathrooms.....Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Did you re-do your kitchen / baths yourself?

My brother in law replaced the sheetrock with cement board in the shower area.

He then tiled the whole bathroom

My father in law installed the new vanity/sink/faucets/Mirror/towel bars/Light

And then we painted.

Bathroom cost me $700 tile
Vanity/sink/Faucet $300

Labor for my brother in law $500

------------------------------------------------------
We only did minor things in our kitchen and we did the work our selves.

We did both ourselves, with help from friends. It took longer than it would've using a contractor because we all work full-time and had limited time to devote to the projects.....but it was definitely worth it, especially because of the amount of money we saved !! Everything came out pretty good too.

Re: Did you re-do your kitchen / baths yourself?

DH did our bathroom by himself. Took it down to studs, moved plumbing the whole nine. It took a lot longer then we expected, but we probably did it for a 1/3 of the price then a contractor. It easily would have ran us 25K+

DH did both our bathroom and kitchen....

I still have no idea how he did it working FT, but they look amazing!!!!

ETA
TOTALLY worth it, our bathroom cost us about $3k, which should have cost more than 10.
Our kitchen cost about $15k I think, and should have been about double that.

We do all of our work ourselves. Contractors charge too much money and they make a mess of your home. Doing it ourselves saves so much money and we do it exactly the way we want it, and at our pace. We use the internet to do our research. Everything you want to know is on the web. You also need to be careful when using the web for research because there are right and wrong ways to do things and not everything on the web is right. HD and Lowes also has 'how to do' clinics and books.

I could have written this. Once we close on our house DH will be doing the Bath & Kitchen while he is off for the summer!

Re: Did you re-do your kitchen / baths yourself?

Over the years, I've done a little bit of everything, but lately, my time is much more valuable than money. I would rather pay someone to do all that labor, and spend time with DW and DC. It will get done a lot faster, and I can spend time with the ones I love..... Chat Icon Chat Icon

We are doing the bathroom and kitchen all by ourselves (and by ourselves, I mean my dad and BIL are doing it for us, god bless them!Chat Icon ). Our bathroom would have cost use close to 15-17K to do professionally, and I think we've spent only 2K.

Another question... hanging cabinets? Anyone have any smart suggestions. I am so worried that once they are hung, they are going to be crooked, or the doors will constantly be ajar a little bit. Any advice on hanging them?

I didn't have any problems. We used a level to make a straight line and then nailed a board right even with that line. We were able to rest the cabinets on that and we knew they were even. Then we removed the board and moved onto the next cabinet. Then we covered up the holes with the tile backsplash but you could use spakle too.

We literally installed our sink plumbing by using the interent. It was really helpful!
