Did you exchange 30th birthday gifts with friends?
A million of my friends are turning 30 this year. Tentatively, my friend and I decided that we would celebrate birthdays however they were celebrated (dinners out, etc) but wouldnt exchange gifts because then everyone would feel obligated to buy gifts for everyone for every birthday and there are many. When questioned by other friends we conveyed that and everyone agreed and was relieved. When my DH turned 30 earlier this year he and I went out to a nice dinner and I put together a scrapbook with contributions from family and his close friends. No gifts. When my friend's DH turned 30 she threw a brunch potluck and we brought a dish but no gift. Dont think anyone else brought gifts either. This weekend we are celebrating another birthday and are doing a nice dinner out and drinks. We will probably all chip in for the birthday girl but no gifts.
I'm fine with that plan, everyone has a lot of expenses lately and I dont really need a million random gifts from everyone or the obligation to shop for everyone. I would consider buying a small gift for my 2 closer friends but also dont want to make them feel obligated to buy gifts for me when my birthday rolls around later this year.
Thoughts? Did you exchange gifts with your friends?

We do. We exchange for the big birthdays. 30's. 40's.
Some years we have chipped in and bought a big gift; other times we have all bought our own.

I exchanged only with my best friend. All other friends we just celebrated/plan on celebrating with them however they wanted to celebrate. My DH is turning 30 in May and we are going away for 4 nights to celebrate. I will probably get him a little something to open as well.

For my closest group of girlfriends we exchange every year - we just went a little bit bigger on 30th
We only exchanged with the outer circles if they had a birthday party

This, for the most part we all would go in together and get one bigger gift. My two besties got me a gc for a new bicycle, for another girl we all (4 or 5 of us) went in on a $300 gc for massage, another we all went in on pots & pans. Typically we limit it to $50-65 per person.

With our really close friends we all chipped in $50 and bought a big gift from all of us. It's worked well so far and many of us turned 30 the same year.

Only for my BFF. She didn't have a party or really celebrate since she had just had her first baby. We have been best friends since middle school and she is more like a sister then a friend. She is godmother to my first born. I went all out for her.
For the rest of my friends, just a celebratory lunch or dinner and a card and small token gift. Nothing crazy.
A few oft friends ( less then half a dozen) had surprise parties thrown for them by their SO's. In those cases I did buy a gift.

nope didn't exchange with anyone. though for my 30th my mom did throw me a surpise party which I didn't not want it was more of a last minute bbq I honestly cant remember if I got gifts. I did plan a dinner and asked everyone to just come out everyone paid for themselves and I think chipped in for me to pay. no need IMO to exchange gift anymore. going out to dinner is good enough

DH threw me a surprise party at our house and every person brought a gift- was totally not expecting that and was surprised by everyone's generosity. I would bring a gift for a friend if I were going to a party or dinner for them.

My close friends and I exchange for every birthday and will probably do something a little bigger for our 30th birthdays. However, we all do what we can afford. Some can afford more than others and I wouldn't expect anything from a friend I knew was struggling - maybe just a nice card.

I haven't exchanged bday gifts with friends since college.
We usually treat one another to a meal and/or event like a show or massage.
