Did you/do you use a bedrail with your toddler bed?

Did you/do you use a bedrail with your toddler bed?
We converted Thomas' crib to toddler bed yesterday. I bought a bedrail from BRU. We installed it, and then realized it wasn't meant for toddler bed. It didn't leave a safe amount of room for him to get out without getting stuck or falling over the top. We took it off and he slept with no rail and pillows on the floor. He didn't fall out, but I'm worried he will and then he'll be afraid to sleep in it.
Any advice?

We do not. He gets in and out on his own most of the time
