We purchased a low profile box spring. Is this needed?

The crib to toddler bed will not get a box spring, but when the it becomes a full sized bed, yes.

You'll need something below the mattress to keep it on the frame. You could use plywood if you wanted, but the frame won't support the mattress by itself. DS has a regular box spring, and DD probably will get one, too.

We bought DD a bed that did not require a box spring, but we did get a low profile boxspring to elevate the mattress so it wouldn't be as difficult to change the sheets.
