Re: Did Texas execute an innocent man - VERY LONG article
I am not for the death penalty.
Sitting and rotting in jail is as good a punishment, if not better than death.
I feel there will always be mistakes, and death cannot be reversed.

I am still in favor of the death penalty and as sad as this story is doesnt change my mind. However I feel that the legal system needs to be revamped. There are too many loopholes for true criminals. There are cases of people caught red handed who raped/murdered women, children etc and some get to watch TV, workout etc instead of being fertilizer.
Kerie--
Thanks for the hug. I don't talk about it all the time but it was something from childhood that I will never be able to forget, and I do not want to forget my friend. There was no foul play that I know of with my friend's death. I could see myself sort of wanting the death penalty if someone intentionally caused that fire but I am still opposed to the death penalty.

I guess the same is true for the guilty who get away under our flawed system. Guilty walk free and innocent die under our current system so nothing is fair unfortunately.
True, but if someone who is guilty walks free, there is a chance that they will screw up again and finally have justice served on them.
Unfortunately, if an innocent person is executed, there is no way to correct that.
Although I think they are both terrible, I find it more difficult to live with the fact that innocent people are put to death. Even if it is a fraction of a possibility, the death penalty should not happen at all unless we can 100% guarantee that innocent people will not die. IMHO, I don't think that is possible.
Exactly exactly exactly.
Guilty people walking free IS horrible. However, this isn't tit for tat-some guilty people walk away scott free so it's okay that some innocent people are executed.
As I said before, if someone did something horrible to a person I loved I would call for their death a thousand times over.
When I hear about unspeakable crimes being committed against children and think the monsters that did it should die a gruesome death.
But that's my primitive side speaking. Rationally, when I think about the DP and the issue at hand, I know that there is almost no way to prove 100% that some one committed a crime.
AND, that's not even what is asked of jurors when they deliberate. They are asked if there is any reasonable doubt. If you are going to put someone to death, I think that standard needs to be raised.
And, as in the case the Stephanie cited demonstrates, experts can get on the stand and say "this is what happened with 100% certainty" and STILL they can be wrong (or there can be doubt that comes up later). In my eyes, that is enough to say that the Death Penalty should not be a possible punishment of a civilized people.
In addition to all of this, I personally feel ill equipped to sentence anyone to death simply because I don't feel it is MY place to condemn someone to something so final, regardless of their actions. I would want them dead but I could never be the one to hand down the sentence as a juror/judge.

I always find it ironic that *usually* people who are FOR the death penalty are AGAINST abortion.
Anyone else?

I agree 100%, I am not for the DP at all...the system as it is, makes too many mistakes for me to be comfortable sentencing someone to death

Re: Did Texas execute an innocent man - VERY LONG article
This article was heartbreaking. I feel so sorry for this poor man. He took a nap and woke up to a real life nightmare. He had his faults but he certainly did not deserve what he got.
The psychologists in that article were laughable. He was a "sociopath" because he had Iron Maiden and Led Zeppelin posters. That is crazy!!!
I am against the death penalty. It doesn't work, it is hypocritical and the thought that even one innocent person was executed is disgusting.

They are seperate issues. But in the sense of terminating a life they have that similarity (obvioulsy for very different reasons.)
Many political candidates that are antiabortion are pro death penalty.

Not necessarily. I am FOR the death penalty and I am pro choice-- My mind set is different from many. I dont know if its because I was in the military that I am more comfortable with the death penalty because its a strong deterrant and there will be casualties but would deter a majority. Its kind of like being in hostile countries and having to bomb. You know that innocent will be killed and you will shed tears but know it serves a bigger purpose.
ETA: In this man's case I think death was not the right sentence. There were variables.

But it's NOT a deterrent. Study after study shows this (at least from what I remember from college-have there been studies since that show it IS a deterrent?).
And-as far as war is concerned, that is completely different IMO. I understand that a bomb may kill innocent people-but it will also save innocent people by hopefully ending the war sooner.
The DP doesn't save any innocent people. There is nothing that can be accomplished through the death penalty that can't be served through life in prison without parole except to satiate the human need to snuff out the life of a monster and to me, that's not enough of a justification especially when we could be snuffing out the wrong life.

First, according to the article, the death penalty has actually been proven to NOT be a deterrant. The threat of it does not seem to stop people from committing horrible crimes.
And I will have to agree to disagree with you that, for me, no instance of having innocent people killed for the greater good should ever be condoned or OK.

Not saying an innocent man dying is not cause for outrage just that in "my" opinion I support the death penalty and unfortunately understand there may be innocent people who will be victims of the system so I would love to revamp the legal system and still have the death penalty as an option for those who prove unfit for existance. You wont execute a man for stealing etc but a serial killer for example who leaves DNA evidence at multiple peoples homes etc where its not just one case that tie the person to a crime.
Studies mean nothing to me personally in issues like this--they are a dime a dozen and you can find one to support whatever side you are on. Also if you have a death penalty system and let people sit on death row till ripe old age--its definitely not a deterrant.
ETA: I understand why people are against it and its OK. Same courtesy for those who are PRO death penalty. We all have our reasons.
