Did I do something stupid?

DH thinks I did.

I was on the phone with a potential employer. Really interestd in having me.

I told them my current salary, and I was truthful.

After I got off the phone, I was thinking I should have lied. Normally I would, but I was wrestling my half naked baby on the diaper table, and she called in the middle.

We were chatting - she has been interested for a while. I told her I would need to be offered more than what I'm making now, and told her my salary.

She said she wanted to meet with me.

The fact that she didnt even bat an eye (or whatever you bat over the phone Chat Icon ) makes me wish I said something higher.

Too late now...

Could I sort of "lie" a little later on, and tell her I was offered more money as an incentive to stay at my current job, and see what she does with that?

Or is it too late and did I totally blow it?????

Re: Did I do something stupid?

Just wait to see what her offer is. Then if it's not as much as you want, try to renegotiate!

Not stupid at all.....I have always been truthful too.

Whats interesting is how much they keep calling me - I have a lot I can offer them - and they seem to be interested in everything I have (no - I'm not a stripper! Chat Icon )

If they are that interested, they will want to compensate you for it!

Re: Did I do something stupid?

It's not that hard for a potential employer to find out your current salary. If you lie, and they check on you, you could lose your opening at the new job..... It's never a good idea to lie about stuff like that.... You can definitely say that one reason you are leaving your old job is that you don't feel you were compensated properly for what you contributed to the previous company, which is true.

Lying will usually bite you in the long run.

Re: Did I do something stupid?

I wouldn't lie, but you could fudge a little by saying "oh, I forgot we get an annual holiday bonus of 10% of our salary" or something like that, and that perhaps you can be compensated for that? I've done that in the past and it seems to have worked!

Absolutely. See what they offer you. Tell them that you would have to think about it. Give it a day or so, than tell them your current employee matched that for you to stay and see if they will go any higher.

I agree with this as well, Liza. See what she brings to the table, first and then open the table up for negotiation.

ITA and think this is great advice.

You did the right thing by saying you would only leave for more money than you're making now. IMHO, you can't go back to them to say that you got offered more money as an incentive to stay b/c that won't make sense. They'd only do that if you said you were leaving (which you'd only do after you had an offer from a new employer).

Good luck! Sounds like they'll love you!

BTW, a while back, my DH didn't lie about what he was making and got a job offer at a salary 50% higher than he was making. So you could still make out in the salary department here!

Never lie about salary to a potential employer. After a phone interview, some companies request a w-2 from the previous years. My company is debating requiring them for certain positions.

Re: Did I do something stupid?

you did fine. My current employer asked for W2s..and a potential new employer a while ago asked for them as well.

Not stupid at all!!

At my company we let someone go on his second day because HR uncovered that he lied about his previous salary. My company felt that was bad character and that he didn't have the morals and ethics we want.

You were fine. At times, we request copies of W2s, etc. Also, when we do verifications and background reports, we do ask for current salary and some companies provide this to us.

Recently I was hiring someone, he inflated his income by $20,000, when we found this out, he didn't get the job, we viewed this as unethical.

Re: Did I do something stupid?

i don't think you did anything stupid! i like one of the PP's advice that if they offer you something that isn't high enough - that you can make a push for something higher by saying that a large reason you are leaving is bc you aren't adequately compensated.

good luck!!
