I don't know about how much something like that should cost, but a 1 carat diamond F-color is great. D is the best color.

one of the first diamonds we looked at (before I won the sapphire battle) was a .76 F color VS-1 Ideal cut diamond
it was stunning. it looked way bigger than it was the way it shone the light. It almost convinced ME to get a diamond LOL...
and it was a bit under $4k. on 47th street. in the diamond district.
I encourage you to encourage your friend to go shopping...see the diamonds IN HAND...know what he is looking at/buying before plunking down such an large sum of money.

Re: Diamond question updated
I couldn't agree more - he should not be financing an engagement ring. Yikes. He's going for bigger than what she wants - why? Cushion cut is going to be more $$ too.
Instead of rushing to get the perfect proposal he should do a little more research and take his time. He's plunking down a lot of cash - he should make it worth it. Imo.

too bad she wants a diamond...
she could get a honking, gorgeous blue or pink sapphire or ruby surrounded by diamonds for that price...and it'd be the tip top in all the c's on the stone AND on the diamonds in the setting. I actually wanted DH to do this for me, but he is sooo traditional he insisted on getting a diamond. I actually wanted a tanzanite (this was before they were so pricey). hehe, me too - I wanted either a sapphire or emerald...but DH is a traditionalist and wanted diamond. He didn't even want the antique stones that I liked - b/c some of the Cs back then were a little weak. He wound up giving me a new diamond in an antique (reproduction) setting. Best of both worlds, I suppose. my DH did the same thing. When I tried to compromise and asked for an antique "miner's cut" I got the from him. LOL I got the same scratch when I suggested the old miner's cut. I might as well have told him to set a piece of black coal

They are cute!

Re: Diamond question updated
My suggestion would be to to get an excellent cut stone, but drop the requirements on the clarity and color specs. If G-I was such a "noticeable" color, Tiffany, Cartier and other jewelry houses wouldn't sell them. Same goes for clarity. VS1/2-SI1 most likely won't be noticeable in a Round Brilliant or Cushion cut stone, especially if it's of an excellent cut. Just be sure that the certificate is GIA.
Have a jeweler present some stones to you, but of different colors and clarities. See if you (or your brother) can see a difference. I know I can't.
As for the suggestion of buying a different type of stone, like a sapphire, the relationship between weight and size is different than that of a diamond (they all vary.) I have a 2.5 carat sapphire that is much smaller in dimensions than my 2.5 ct diamond.

If you're going to spend that much money this is the much better ring IMO..
But I also think he could probably do better in manhattan than on blue nile. I'm comparing this to my ring and other rings of people I know who have gotten similar rocks for less, or better ones for not THAT much more.
I think if he goes in with these as the specs, and esp if he's willing to bend to go to VS2 or S1 and G color, he's be within his $4K budget.
The great thing about a dealer is you can go in and say "I want this, and I am willing to spend $x" and they can work with you. I enjoyed picking out my diamond because I told them the specs I wanted and got to look at several different stones, and in the end I didn't have to compromise ANY of the 4C's. I got everything within the level I wanted for a price my FH was apparently willing to pay..and this was as a college senior making very little money (yes, he spoils me)

Re: Diamond question updated
i think he should check blue nile again for ones that are slightly less than a carot- i just took a peek and saw a few .95 carot diamonds with good color and clarity for less than $4K... a simple nice white gold band for a solitaire ring was about $300-$500. so that would all fall more within his budget!
he should call their customer service, too and tell them what hes looking for and have them walk him through it.... from the reviews on there, their customer service line is REALLY good! i never had to call them, but apparently they've helped quite a few guys out!

1.70-Carat Cushion-Cut Diamond This Very Good-cut, J-color, and SI1-clarity diamond comes accompanied by a diamond grading report from the GIA. Price: $6,268
I'd tell him to go for a smaller carat size and a better color. JMHO!
ITA - the absolute lowest I would go is: I ...but, if it were me, I would prefer H or higher... ideal: F or G

Re: Diamond question updated
tell him to put all the $ he can into the diamond and just get a 14kt gold plain setting. you can always change the setting later on.
I would never want to scarifice any of the 4 C's and I also agree that he should get a GIA certified stone.

Also, if you go to the diamond district, they can copy pretty much any setting that you want, and you can tweak the design if you care to. I wanted this ring, but are some things about this ring that weren't physically comfortable...so I tweaked it and got what I wanted, all at a discount price!!!

Re: Diamond question updated
I know I'm a late responder but if it's not too late I second a lot of what has been said.
You can get better deals in the diamond district than on BlueNile, although BlueNile is much better than dept stores and mall shops.
I'd say CUT is the most important -- a well cut stone will look bigger, whiter and sparkle more. I think you shouldn't sacrifice cut, and say to go with GIA excellent. If you have to, GIA very good but I strongly suggest sticking with excellent.
As for color, if you have an excellent cut stone you could probbaly go down to H or I if you need to, but I'd recommend G, maybe H. Don't go lower than I...
As for clarity, as long as it's eye-clean this is probably the area you can sacrifice most. This means VS2, SI1 and the occasional SI2 will be OK. Never go below SI2 and don't buy an SI2 without seeing it first because some are eye clean and others are not. If you are on a budget and size is important, you can see a difference in carat more than a difference in clarity when you are in the VVS1-VS2 range.
Here's a website for a diamond district dealer which allows you to search by price:
