Well, no of course, but the inital buying of the house is scary, the amt of money that goes out of your acct, the mortgage payment, I was merely stating that the likelihood of you struggling for 30 years is very small. The inital buy will be the biggest thing, but soon after you will find that you are not struggling due to advances in your income, equity and a savings plan. Those things will not be static. They will change and most likely you will be better off than you are today financially if you continue to grow your career. If you make $50k now, you will most likely make more in 1 year, 5 years, 10 years..etc..
it's not just the housing though. everything is more expensive here, and not just by a little more.
our little trip to NC last weekend confirmed that we can have an easier life somewhere else. the property taxes for example in NC are not just a fraction of what they are here, they're a tiny fraction. our car insurance would go down by a 1/3 (we checked) and so would our utility bills.
if and when we move, it is not a decision we are baisng solely on the cost of buying a house. it is based on everything else that our life costs here. there is a reason why there is a mass exodus out of NY & NJ to that area.
almost everyone at our hotel was sitting in the breakfast area looking at RE forms. most of the cars in the parking lot were from NY & NJ.
Hopefully for all that are moving, salaries will be comparable to offset the expenses.

we'll see...

that's b/c we're 2 of a kind... or 3 of a kind
This is VERY true!! And I loved my neighbor's house too. It was for sale at the same time as mine, and I loved that theirs had a porch. I love porches...I think I belong in GA!
Meaghan, you're welcome to be my neighbor!! I'd love that, although I know it won't happen! Here are current homes for sale in my development/neighborhood/subdivision... Prices have gone up, but they're still very affordable for what you get. And it's an award winning community!

Aha...so we're in a heated battle over best southern suburb, are we now?
OK, you win...it doesn't fake snow!
But we do get real snow flurries in the winter, does that count?
Lovin' the South!! I guess we can't help ourselves!!

Yeah, but you own bedroom furniture...beautiful one at that. Something DH and I can't agree on.
And you won't be a renter forever.
We're even!!

Re: DH got bit by the North Carolina bug!
we got bit a few months ago, but put calamine lotion on it quick and decied to stay in NY, we just can't leave the city, Montauk, family, plus, it is MUCH odfferent than NY, so if you like the culture of NY (being able to eat Thai food, chinese, Italian, etc) The carolinas are not for us. I wish it was because I hear the houses are amazing, bt I need diversity!!

have you actually gone there?

DH gets urgers to leave LI quite often. He's been telling me this since the day we met. I've known him for over 4 years and we're still here, so I guess it's just a matter of time (or a fantasy)!
We hardly ever go to the city and never go to Montauk or the Hamptons. Whenever we want to get away for a night or two, we always look to leave LI. I guess if we were more connected to all that this area has to offer, we wouldn't always be looking to go somewhere else. But you know what they say...The grass is always greener...
