Dexamethasone/prednisone question (weaning off)
Those who were on either of these for their IVF cycle, when you found out it was a BFN, what is the process of weaning off it? How much longer are you on it after you know the cycle was a bust? I know you can't just stop it and are supposed to wean off. I am just wondering what the process is. Do you start taking half a pill daily or a pill every other day for a certain length of time?

Re: Dexamethasone/prednisone question
I was always told to stop any meds once I got a BFN. There was no weaning off period for me. I'm not sure why there would be.

I was told that you cannot just stop the pred/ Dex if you are on it more than a week. You have to be weaned off. I am just referring to the steroid and not other meds, as they are stopped immediately

Really? I have never been told this! I need to ask the nurse. I have been on dexamethasone for weeks on end and stopped as soon as I got the BFN.

I'm sure if Daisy21 reduces the dose then it must be what I'm supposed to do.

If one of us is wrong, at least one of us learned something new with this process. As if there isn't enough to deal with...

Re: Dexamethasone/prednisone question (weaning off)
I always weaned off prednisone. If I didn't I had horrible headaches and withdrawal. I'm sure the side effects and withdrawal symptoms are worse if you are on a higher dosage and are on it for a long time. As per Dr. B, he cut my dose in half for two weeks and then half again for a week. Usually, its just half and then half. But like I said, I'm so sensitive.

Re: Dexamethasone/prednisone question (weaning off)
I was told to wean by taking one every other day for a week.
BTW...can someone explain the reason why we need to wean off of this steroid?

Re: Dexamethasone/prednisone question (weaning off)
You are suppose to wean off prednisone, if not it can cause respiratory problems. My doctor forgot to mention this little tidid of info and I had heart palpitations and trouble breathing and it scared the bejesus outta me!

Thanks...it's nice to know the reasoning behind the things they require us to do.

Re: Dexamethasone/prednisone question (weaning off)
I am weaning off dex now... I was taking 2 pills a day, but now since I'm weaning off I'm taking 1 a day for a week and then cutting it in half for a week.
I weaned off it when I got pregnant last spring too by cutting the dose in half.
ETA: I wanted to add even with weaning off gradually, I've been getting headaches on and off this week. However, it could also be from the bcp I just started. When you're and off all these things constantly you just never know what anything is from!

Re: Dexamethasone/prednisone question (weaning off)
I'm hearing that some doctors ask you to take half the dose to wean off and others are asked to take dose every other day. I wonder why there are different methods to weaning off.

Re: Dexamethasone/prednisone question (weaning off)
So if you are on .75 of Dexamethasone, you are asked to cut the pill in half for a week or do they prescribe a lower dose pill?

Cut it in half. There should be a little ridge in the middle of the pills already. Breaking it is easy.

I was never told either....After my failed cycle I had to ask if I need to stop everything and that's when he told me about taking half a pill a day....

Re: Dexamethasone/prednisone question (weaning off)
every time stopped dex i weaned off. Dr. B said toi cut the dose in half for a week on .75 - so i weaned off it in one week, and for 1.5 i weaned off in two weeks. i never had any side effects from coming off of it.
