I have heard conflicting stories. I know you should not have x rays done when you are pregnant, but is it ok to go for a cleanings. I tend to have gum issues so I wanted to know if it would be ok to continue going.

Yes, actually it is perfectly fine to go to the dentist while pregnant and cleanings are actually recommended (but not x-rays obviously). I had a ton of dental work done in my first pregnancy, and my OB said to have it done in the 2nd trimester. This was actual dental work, I had a wisdom tooth pulled and some procedures toward an implant I was getting. The only thing my OB said was to tell the dentist no epinephrine in the novocaine.

I have a dentail cleaning scheduled for the 9th of February. I will be 26 weeks.

Re: dentist

my Dr said x-rays are fine too, since thy're so localized, and the baby is protected under lead.

I need to go to get a chipped tooth fixed, but I've been stalling (cause I'm a big dentist baby).

I'm a dental hygienist and I scream Yes!! Go for your cleanings especially if you have gum issues. Periodontal disease is linked to low birthweight babies.....As far as xrays are concerned I prefer to hold off on them until after birth unless the patient is having a problem. Happy Brushing!
