Dehumidifier?

We're moving into a new place (Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon) and the basement definitely needs a dehumidifier. It's very damp and musty down there. Problem is, I've never needed one before and have NO clue what to look for. Any tips or brand recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks!!! Chat Icon

Re: Dehumidifier?

Congrats on the new place!!!!!!!!!!!!! Where is it? You must be so excited! I've never used a dehumidifier, only a humidifier in the winter, but good luck! Chat Icon

ETA: Basements scare me so I try to avoid them at all costs.

ETA: I just remembered we did use one in my brother's room after his air conditioner leaked. We used a Whirlpool similar to this one:

Re: Dehumidifier?

They have a good selection at Sears. They were pretty helpful with helping us pick one out.

Some of them have a basin, and some can be piped into a sink or drain, so that's a factor.

Other than that i think they're pretty standard. You may want one with more than one mode, and with automatic shutoff.

Thank you! It's in Nesconset. Not too far from here or from you guys! We're thrilled!

I know my parents have one, but that thing is ancient and not very helpful for what's out there now.

Thanks for the link! Chat Icon

Hmm...I don't think we have any drains down there and there definitely isn't a sink, so we'd definitely need a basin one. Thank you for that info!

I'll have to stop by Sears!

We have this one (currently unavailable from Amazon, where we bought it) and we love it.

Hmm..it doesn't have a price listed (because it's currently not available). Do you remember off the top of your head how much it costs?

Re: Dehumidifier?

Also, does pint amount have anything to do with the square footage area it can work with, or is that just the amount of water it can hold?

Re: Dehumidifier?

I saw a DeLongi in Costco this past weekend for about $150, I think. When I lived in a basement apt., I bought a Kenmore from Sears. It was a smaller model, because that was what I could afford at the time, but it worked well and I would buy another Kenmore if I needed one.

Re: Dehumidifier?

look for sq. footage. like hte one on amazon says it's ideal for 550 sq ft. when we went to sears we described the area and they helped us pick. Sometimes it tells you how many pints it can remove per day adn that's related to power, but the pint capacity on the basin is something else. it depends on how humid it is and how often you want to empty the basin. We got one with a larger basin and we keep it on low so we don't have to empty it every single day. If it's pwerful and the air is very humid, you might find yourslef emptying a smaller basin a few times per day.

Do they sell them there? I actually need to make a trip there today, so that would be ideal if they did. It would save me a lot of trucking around!

Thanks! It's got a lot more space than we're used to. It will be nice, especially with baby #2 on the way. Plus, we're getting the heck away from our horrid landlords. We're so excited! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
