Deciding on a doc

So now that DH and I are actively ttc, how do you decide on the type of ob/gyn to use? My previous doc was a 75 yr old man who while very sweet, is sort of losing his touch so to speak..lol. Anyone have suggestions as to what questions to ask and how to decide on the type of doc I should be seeing?

As always, thanks ladies! I'm so glad I joined this board.

Re: Deciding on a doc

I think it's most important to have a doctor that you are comfortable with and you personally feel is competent. Age doesn't really make a difference to me. Having said that however my doctor IS pretty young and a straightforward kind of doctor.

Re: Deciding on a doc

Oh, I agree. I'm not saying his age bothers me, it's that he is forgetting things, can't hear very well and I fear that he'll make me really nervous. So I am sort of taking a proactive approach to this. I would like to be comfortable with my doc and lately, he hasn't really been making me feel that way.

Thanks for the advice. :)

Re: Deciding on a doc

When DH and I moved to our current home (quite a distance from my old doc) I asked my friends and family (who are local) for recommendations for a practice.

I figured how bad could they be if the people who know me best use them?

From that point I checked out the website for each of the practices recommended (if they had one) and from that I narrowed down my choices. Now for me, I felt comfortable making my choice that way, but if you're not, I would recommend you set up some consultations with doctors in your area, those who may have been recommended to you and meet with them. From that, you should be able to gather who you would feel most comfortable with.

Honestly, I need to ask (and PLEASE don't take this the wrong way) but why would you see a doctor who is that old? I'm concerned that he's even still practicing, nevermind the fact that he's forgetting things!!

You need to remember, your health, whether your TTC or not is paramount and you should be seeing physicians who are on the top of their game.

So, there's my .02 of free advice, take it for what it's worth!! Chat Icon

Good luck, I hope you find someone you're comfortable with! Chat Icon
